Chrissy Teigen, Seth Rogan, Celebrities Donate Money to Bail Out Those Arrested in Nationwide Protests - Newsweek

blogsjga.blogspot.com

Chrissy Teigen, Seth Rogan and a wave of other celebrities have pledged money to bail out protesters arrested during nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd.

Teigen, 34, said she decided to make a $100,000 donation after President Donald Trump declared Saturday night was "MAGA night" at the White House.

"In celebration of whatever the f*** maga night is, I am committed to donating $100,000 to the bail outs of protestors across the country," she wrote on Twitter.

Trump had condemned protesters in a tweet on Saturday morning, claiming they were "professionally managed" and had "little to do with the memory of George Floyd."

"Tonight, I understand, is MAGA NIGHT AT THE WHITE HOUSE???" he ended the tweet, without elaborating on what that meant.

Teigen, a model and cookbook author, later upped her donation to $200,000 in response to a tweet—which has since been deleted—in which a user called the protesters "rioters and criminals."

"Ooo they might need more money then. Make it $200,000," she wrote.

A number of other celebrities have also revealed that they've donated funds to help bail out protesters over the past few days.

Seth Rogan tweeted a chain of donations saying he had "matched" a contribution and "then much more" to the Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF), a nonprofit that pays bail for those who could not otherwise afford it.

Other famous names, including Steve Carrell, Don Cheadle and Patton Oswalt, shared the chain adding that they had also "matched" a donation.

Rapper Noname started another chain, saying she had donated $1,000 to the fund and adding: "Celebrity accounts that follow me… match."

Jameela Jamil, James Blake, Yara Shahidi and Janelle Monáe were among the celebrities who said they had matched Noname's donation.

Social media has been flooded with posts from people sharing that they have donated to the organization in recent days and some celebrities have taken to Twitter to urge people to contribute what they can.

Padma Lakshmi wrote on Twitter on Friday that Minneapolis police were "arresting Black journalists and killing Black people for simply existing, while the leader of our government tweets: "When the looting starts, the shooting starts," baiting a race war. This is America in 2020."

Alongside a link to the MFF's website, she added: Here's how you can help as an ally right now. Put your anger, grief and sadness into action and help to pay bail for arrested protesters."

Actor Mark Ruffalo also urged his followers to donate to the nonprofit, saying "they're combatting the harms of incarceration by paying bail for low-income individuals who cannot otherwise afford it."

Almost 1,400 people have been arrested during protests in 16 U.S. cities since Thursday, according to a tally by the Associated Press.

The unrest started in Minneapolis after the death of Floyd, a black man, in Minneapolis police custody on Monday and then spread to cities across the U.S.

Video footage showed a police officer pressed a knee on Floyd's neck while he gasped that he couldn't breathe. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was arrested on Friday and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin has been fired from the police department, along with three other officers.

Chauvin's arrest did little to stop protesters decrying years of police killings of black people.

Many of the protests started out peaceful, but later descended into violence, with clashes between protesters and police seen in cities including Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York City.

The nationwide protests come after Americans have faced months of lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 100,000 people in the U.S., left millions out of work and disproportionately affected black people.

Billie Eilish, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and More Celebrities Respond to George Floyd's Death - Teen Vogue

blogsjga.blogspot.com

One particular post combatted the all-too-common response of “All Lives Matter,” where Billie used a couple of analogies to explain why that response is truly nonsensical. “Right now, right in this moment, we have to address hundreds of years of oppression of black people,” she wrote in all caps. “The slogan of #BlackLivesMatter does not mean that other lives don’t. It’s calling attention to the fact that society clearly thinks that black lives don’t f*cking matter!!!! And they f*cking do!!!”

Ava DuVernay

The director shared a photo of Floyd earlier this week, penning a powerful post alongside the picture. “You deserved your breath, your dignity, your life,” she wrote. “Not to die in the street, murdered by a white cop’s knee on your neck. You deserve our tears, our prayers, our rage, our action. We must act - for you - and for all of those were no cameras are present. We must. #GeorgeFloyd.”

Dove Cameron

Ahead of the weekend, Dove wrote a lengthy post calling on her fellow Americans to take action and demand justice for Floyd. “It is our responsibility as a nation and as a society to demand that these men not receive special treatment because they are police officers, and that they BE CHARGED FOR MURDER,” she said. “Anything less is an injustice, and a communication that we, as a nation, and they, as our government, do not care about black lives.” At the end of her post, Dove listed the phone numbers for Minnesota’s Governor and Attorney General.

Justin and Hailey Bieber

In their latest episode of The Biebers on Watch, the celeb couple spent nearly an hour discussing the importance of allyship with Angela Rye. Their discussion touched on a variety of issues, like racial bias, white privilege, and ways for white people to simply do better.

Jameela Jamil

For her post, Jameela spoke about the growing protests around the country, highlighting why such reactions are appropriate and essential. “Nothing about these protests is reckless,” she emphasized. “It’s the only way to combat the oppressive, constant and pervasive violence they are met with physically and emotionally every day of their lives. Even in the supposed safety of their own homes. What is reckless is how these people who have historically been so oppressed, are continuously mistreated in the name of white supremacy.”

Kylie Jenner

The reality star and makeup designer wrote a long post on Instagram where she highlighted some of the fears she has for her own daughter, and how everyone must learn to do better. “I’ll never personally experience the pain and fear that many black people around the country go through every day but I know nobody should have to live in fear and nobody deserves a death like George Floyd and too many others,” she said. “Speaking up is long overdue for the rest of us. We’re currently dealing with two horrific pandemics in our country, and we can’t sit back and ignore the fact that racism is one of them.”

Nick Jonas

In an Instagram post, the Jonas Brothers singer shared information regarding a petition, adding: "A family lost their loved one while pleading for help and the simple act to breathe. This is inexcusable."

Demi Lovato

In an Instagram post earlier this week, Demi called on her fans to use their voices — especially fans who are white. “This is not okay,” she wrote. “And it will not stop until everyone does their part. Especially white people. I said it recently and I’ll say it again, do not let your discomfort surrounding social issues prevent you from speaking up for those IN DANGER. And reality is, until this STOPS COMPLETELY - THE BLACK COMMUNITY WILL CONTINUE TO LIVE IN DANGER. DO YOUR PART. THIS INVOLVES YOU TOO.”

Editor's Note: We will be updating this piece as more celebrities to continue to speak out.

PPP&G Form Psych Pop Project, And More Music News and Gossip | Flagpole - Flagpole Magazine

NESTING TIME: I have no idea how this slipped under my radar, but Father Werewolf released its debut album, Red Bird, back on Apr. 1. Composed of longtime Athens rockers Mandy Branch, Forrest Leffer and Christian Phily, the band strikes the tuneful three-way intersection between early punk rock, ‘90s college radio and melodic math rock. And while I wouldn’t exactly call this retro, there does seem to be a profound sense of rejection and embrace—the former being a jettisoning of the modern world, and the latter a soft but deliberate folding of oneself into patterns of nostalgia driven by muscle memory. I’m most taken by the tracks that float their melodicism as a banner, like the title track, “Please Don’t,” and “Inner Pool.” Truth be told, this is enjoyable from start to finish, and, for listeners of a certain age, this will sound—counterintuitively—both of a certain time and timeless. For everyone else, dig at your own speed. Check this out now over at fatherwerewolf.bandcamp.com.

HOME REMEDIES: Phelan LaVelle and Greg O’Connell, each of Athens’ bedrock psych-dealers Shade, just released a self-made “quarantine album” under the moniker PPP&G. The extra Ps are for Peavey and Poco, who are presumably the sweet dogs featured on the cover art. And if they’re not, well, they should be. The five-song release is self-titled and a very mellow, lightly psychedelic pop excursion. There are a couple of dips into art-rock rhythms (the bass line of “The Watch,” for example), but mostly this is really relaxing and doesn’t require a whole lot of attention. It’s almost as if PPP&G, even while in quarantine, never stopped anticipating an endless summer. All in all, not a bad project. Plan your picnic over at pppg.bandcamp.com.

AT A TIME AND PLACE: The Electric Nature roars again this month with the release of the two-track, 40-minute Forest Wisdom. Assuming its familiar position between specificity and vaguery, all we know about this record is that it “was recorded live to cassette sometime in the last 20 years, somewhere in the state of Georgia.” Also as usual, the core trio (Michael Pierce, Michael Potter and Thom Strickland) make ready art from improvisational sounds that are layered such that they always total more than the mere sum of their parts. The first side of this flows forward dreamily, with electronics creating illusions of wind, gull squawks, etc. This bleeds over for a moment into Side B, which quickly moves into primitive free jazz and string scraping before delivering some quick wow and flutter, and then shutting down completely. In the full scope of the vastness of The Electric Nature’s catalog, this is likely not essential, but it is a nice introduction to what’s going on if you’ve never been introduced to them before. Introductions are now happening on an ongoing basis over at theelectricnature.bandcamp.com.

HEEEEREEEE’S MICHAEL!: In related news, the aforementioned Michael Potter (Garden Portal, Null Zone) has started a cool web series named Garden Portal Presents that streams each Thursday evening at 7 p.m. It features Potter as host, talking about whatever he wants (label news, music, etc.), and then features largely pre-recorded main guest spots of featured musicians and artists. The series will be nearly a month old by the time you read this, and this week’s show features the Magic Tuber Stringband (North Carolina). Upcoming shows will feature Ariel Ackerly, Boston’s Rob Noyes and New York’s J.R. Bohannon, and some select local performers. Because YouTube links are completely unwieldy I’ve gone ahead and shortened the one for Garden Portal Presents, and here it is: bit.ly/2WHkRwF. So, enjoy!

HEY, HOW YA DOIN’?: It’s been over a year since Sean McDonald (MMM Sound) had a dedicated release from his long-running project Heat Sureens, but he’s come back into focus with the new single “Good Morning.” Largely built from vocal loops and echoes, there’s not a lot of meat on these bones, and the song is sparse even where its parts are crowded. The overall effect is that of someone whispering quickly in your ear, then dashing away before you can discern what they said. While this may not be the most compelling release in Heat Sureens’ pile of releases, it was a nice reminder to go back and visit McDonald’s prodigious output from over the years. Consider this your reminder, too, and head to mmmsound.bandcamp.com to dig in.
