Trend Alert: How South Asian Celebrities Are Inspiring A New Era Of Intimate Weddings - BrownGirlMag

blogsjga.blogspot.com
4 min read

The pandemic has completely changed the face of daily life. It’s also thrown many businesses and industries for a toss – particularly the wedding industry. As a pandemic bride myself, the added layer of uncertainty to the already paramount stress of wedding planning made the struggle all the more real. However, on the brighter side, it’s finally time to take good hard look at the concept of the ‘Big Fat Indian Wedding’ and it’s societal and environmental repercussions. As we can see from the many intimate weddings that took place over the past two years, it’s absolutely possible to celebrate responsibly without compromising on the aesthetics. Let’s take a look at how some celebrities planned their special day, amidst lockdowns and restrictions, setting new trends to make your intimate wedding a dreamy affair.

The Mindful Way

One of my personal favourite celebrity weddings would have to be Dia Mirza and Vaibhav Rekhi’s intimate garden celebration. It broke so many unsaid wedding rules and for all the right reasons. The simple and elegant ceremony that was officiated by a female priest took place in Dia Mirza’s home garden and prioritised sustainability. Starting with locally-grown flowers for decor to the simple outfits that the couple opted to wear. Each aspect of the celebration was carefully planned to be eco-friendly and mindful. Guests were presented with plants in handcrafted woven baskets, made by artisans in Meghalaya, and drinks were served out of glass bottles to cut down on plastic. The zero-waste and eco-friendly approach gave their wedding a very rustic and earthy vibe whilst still being so romantic.

Something Borrowed

Another way of being mindful is by being conscious about your wedding outfit. Add a touch of nostalgia by repurposing a family heirloom. Just like how Miheeka Bajaj wore her mother’s bridal lehenga for her Bhatt Nyotana ceremony and Yami Gautam draped her mother’s wedding saree on her special day. It’s a trend that is easy to incorporate into your wedding plans and one that’s bound to create some fond memories.

Fashion Forward

  • We can all agree that fashion icon Rhea Kapoor’s dainty veil crafted with numerous pearls, in addition to the cape over her saree blouse, will go down in history as a true fashion moment. I am sure it has already made it to the Pinterest boards of many brides looking to step up their style game on the big day.
  • Rajkummar Rao’s bride, and actress, Patralekha’s gorgeous red tulle embroidered butti wedding saree was quite the showstopper. But the real star was her custom dupatta which had the words ‘I am submitting you my heart full of love’ embroidered on the border in Bangla. This is sure to inspire many brides and can be incorporated into any wedding outfit. What’s more romantic than a note of love on one of the most special outfits of your lifetime?
  • Wedding saree blouses have always been a way to show off one’s creativity, be it through exclusive embroidery work or the addition of dramatic sleeves. But it was actress Kajal Aggarwal who literally brought sexy back with multi-layer chain detailing on the back of her engagement blouse. It added an exquisite touch to her elegant yellow saree.

These brides have shown us that wedding outfits can be a beautiful way to add a touch of personality and uniqueness to your day and can make any event, however intimate, feel grand and special.

Another way, though, to make your intimate wedding outfit stand out is to incorporate less common colour themes. One recurring hue that was seen during latest weddings were pastel pinks. Indian Idol judge and former contestant Neha Kakkar and singer Rohanpreet Singh tied the knot wearing matching blush pink outfits.

While classic reds will always remain in the picture, pastel colours seem to be a popular alternative for a more subtle yet surreal aesthetic – a perfect fit for an intimate wedding.

Minimal Mehndi

A lot of celebrity brides opted for minimalistic Mehndi designs this season and it’s a trend that I can think of many reasons to get on board with. During my own wedding, one of the hardest parts for me was having to wait hours for both the Mehndi application and staining, which wasn’t necessarily a comfortable experience. Simple designs, on the other hand, are sure to make things a lot easier and still edgier. Both Yami Gautam and Patralekha opted for simple mandala designs that coordinated perfectly with their outfits. Nobel Laureate Malala Yousufzai went a step further by applying a simple and traditional henna design on her palms all by herself!

Whether you are in the process of planning your own intimate wedding or are helping plan a loved one’s big day, these celebrity trends can definitely come in handy to make the event all the more special and personal.

Lesbian Bars Are Disappearing. Gossip Grill Paves a Way to Survive - Bon Appetit

A few days later, Brittany Rae Leach, Gossip’s head of marketing, joins me at the bar during off hours. She has a big smile and auburn hair that’s been waved with precision. When she talks about Gossip, she crackles like a bonfire. She says the decision to identify as a women’s bar and not a lesbian bar is not only motivated by appearances or the bottom line. If anything, it’s personal. “Our choice to view ourselves as a women’s bar affects so many people very deeply rooted in our community,” Leach says. “It was really important to us to be inclusive and as far away from hypocritical as possible.”

Gossip Grill is a community space for queer women. Dina Johnson, a sterile processing tech at a nearby hospital and a Gossip regular for the last 12 years, uses the bar as a home base for various fundraising efforts benefiting the local homeless community. When she learned that Gossip was struggling to keep its doors open in the pandemic, she started a GoFundMe to raise money for out-of-work staff members and to pay off the bar’s lingering utility bills. At first, Johnson only asked for $1000. But donors exceeded that $1000 mark in fewer than three days.

“A lot of people didn’t just donate ten or fifteen dollars. They donated hundreds. That’s how much this place is loved,” she says. “If I were to need anything, I’m pretty sure [Moe] wouldn’t say no to me. Moe is always for it, whatever I’m doing.”

Seated at the high-top at our first meeting, Girton regales me with tidbits of Gossip history. In 2011, during the county-wide blackout that left 1.4 million residents without power, the community flocked to the bar. Chris Shaw, founder of Gossip’s parent company Mo’s Universe, had a generator installed on-site, prompting staff to throw an impromptu dance party that became an annual event. When the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando happened in 2016, the community grieved at Gossip. When Biden was elected president in November 2020, that same crowd partied here. “Whenever something happens and nobody knows what to do, they come here,” Girton says. “This is important. This is home.”

Erica Rose, who created the Lesbian Bar Project with Elina Street, tells me over Zoom that the struggle for space has defined, and in turn confined, lesbian life across the country. “Queer women never occupied neighborhoods in the same way that gay men have,” Rose says. She notes that while gay male communities have managed to colonize entire neighborhoods, there are no lesbian equivalents. And the pandemic, which already burdened small-business owners, disproportionately impacted women.

The lesbian businesses that are going to survive for decades to come will have to follow Gossip’s example and shapeshift into something beyond a bar. “We need to look for new ways that bars can serve the current generation’s needs,” she says. “They’re becoming community centers. They’re becoming restaurants, spaces for family, spaces with sober options, spaces for political organizing. Lesbian bars are more than just bars.”

16 “Gossip Girl” Reboot Episode 7 Outfits, Ranked From "Why Would You Buy That" To "Thankful This Exists" - BuzzFeed

So many outfits to be thankful for...

Welcome back, Upper East Siders! It's wild to think we were here just two short months ago judging our little hearts away. Did you miss me? Because I certainly missed you!

While it's exciting to get back into all things fashion and Gossip Girl, we do need to talk about the elephant in the room. The second half of Season 1 is being dropped within two weeks, so three episodes dropped last week and the remaining three will be dropped this coming Thursday. So, in the spirit of the season, we'll be moving through these rankings at a rapid fire speed.

So, let's not waste any more time and get into all the looks from Episode 7: "Once Upon a Time in the Upper West Side."

16. Saskia's ~interesting~ appearance outfit.

HBO

The hat alone is such a fashion disaster. And don't even get me started on the clashing patterns and FUR jacket!

15. The trio teachers' tired, but cozy looks.

HBO

Guys, I'm so bored of these same old outfits again and again. Where's the pizzazz? Where's the drama? Ugh, I can see why we never focused on the teachers in the original GG.

14. Kate's cute Thanksgiving striped look.

HBO

It may be giving "soccer mom who's scolding her bratty children while also hiding wine in her coffee mug," but it works for Ms. Kate.

13. Audrey's layered uniform.

HBO

I love that each episode seems to have a changing uniform standard for the girls. Trust me, this is not the last layered uniform on this list.

12. Audrey's drab Thanksgiving dress.

HBO

These kids have all the money in the world and yet this dress looks like someone could buy from a clearance rack. I'm not mad, just disappointed.

11. Nick's cozy hosting fit.

HBO

Zoya seems to take after her dad in the sweater department and I couldn't love that more!! I hope we see more of these funky sweaters as we head into the winter episodes!

10. Julien's dope FUBU jersey.

HBO

Fun fact: I was completely obsessed with wearing FUBU and Baby Phat when I was growing up in Queens, NY. Seeing this jersey made me so nostalgic. 20/10, I'm probably looking to buy this online as we speak.

9. Zoya's girl-next-door uniform.

HBO

We're back with the layered uniform! But this time, little Z took a cue from her dad and brought out the funky sweater. So cute!

8. Julien's Betty Cooper-esque uniform.

HBO

Okay, I can't really explain this properly but, when I see this sweater, all I see is Betty Cooper from Riverdale a la Season 1. And that's not an insult at all! The sweater is so cute and cozy. Plus, look at the layering!!

7. Zoya's sweet hosting sweater.

HBO

No one can step to the Lotts when it comes to their sweater game. No one.

6. Lola's polka dot dream dress.

HBO

Lola doesn't really get a lot of screen time and, after the messiness she pulled at Thanksgiving, I kinda see why. Still, the dress is super cute.

5. Saskia's meddling floral look.

HBO

Well, this is definitely a first for these posts! Someone from the bottom actually made it to the top five. An impossible feat, sure, but of course Saskia could pull it off like she pulled off this dress.

4. Julien's out on the town fit.

HBO

While Z also wore a sheepskin jacket in this episode, Julien's is better due to the darker color. However, I'm not a fan of the bag as it kinda clashes with the jacket.

3. Gideon's upcycled cape.

HBO

This. Man. Always. Delivers!! This cape is so weird and outlandish and gorgeous. And, of course, he absolutely pulls it off because who else could?!

2. Julien's daring Thanksgiving gown.

HBO

I wish we could've seen a full picture of this dress (cue eye rolling here) but alas, this dress was still incredible. In a blink and you'll miss it moment, you can see three cut outs across the back which gives its daring edge. Just fabulous as always!

1. Kiki's comeback look.

HBO

Audrey's mom was going through it in the first half of the season, so we never really got to see her in anything but sweats. But, that's all in the past now because this look is EVERYTHING. She looks so good that I'm speechless. I hope this isn't the last time we see Ms. Keeks in the top spot.

Until the next episode, my darlings!!

The daily gossip: November 29, 2021 - The Week Magazine

More than eight months after Meghan Markle dropped the bombshell allegation that there were "concerns" in the royal family about "how dark" her baby's skin would be, a new book claims to have more information. Author Christopher Andersen's book Brothers and Wives: Inside the Private Lives of William, Kate, Harry, and Meghan claims that after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement was announced in 2017, Prince Charles asked his wife, Camilla, "I wonder what the children will look like?" According to the book, Camilla, who was "somewhat taken aback," replied "Well, absolutely gorgeous, I'm certain." Charles allegedly responded, "I mean, what do you think their children's complexion might be?" A spokesperson for Charles denied the account, calling it "fiction and not worth further comment." On the Today show, Andersen stood by the reporting while insisting Charles made the remarks in a "very kind of benign way" and that they were then "turned into something very toxic." Meghan and Harry have never identified who made the comments referenced in the Oprah interview, but Andersen told Today he believes Meghan was referring to Charles' remarks.

Communist Party cancel culture targets internet celebrities - The Economist

blogsjga.blogspot.com

FANS OF HUO ZUN were dismayed in August when images of the pop star were blurred out during a performance on “Call Me By Fire”, a popular Chinese reality show. Mr Huo’s hands were visible during some sequences. But when he came into the frame it appeared as if he was standing in a puff of smoke enveloping his body. “Fogging”, as it is known, has become a common on the Chinese internet in recent years. Censorship rules require actors who have committed crimes be blurred out, or completely erased when possible.

Mr Huo’s offence was a public breakup with his girlfriend earlier in the year. He had violated no law. But that was enough for the government to deem him an unsavoury character, unfit to appear in public. Internet users are increasingly affected by a spurt of Communist Party cancel culture targeting ever more innocuous behaviour. The broad aim of the campaign, which has been going on for the past six months, is to cleanse Chinese cyberspace of entertainment at odds with socialist values.

There appear to be two targets. The first is a business model with 4.9trn ($767bn) of annual revenues, the fan economy, that has sprung up around internet celebrities, fan groups and streaming platforms. In the most recent set of rules, issued in late November, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) said that brand campaigns featuring celebrities will be allowed to show advertisements only in designated ad spaces. And from now on, China’s huge fan groups, often with millions of fans apiece, are to come under close monitoring by the authorities.

To aid the crackdown the CAC has been increasing its powers in recent months. It is now an investor in several internet firms, including a subsidiary of ByteDance, and Kuaishou, a short-video app. Further new regulations suggest that its objective is to stop China’s internet groups using highly-stimulating content to ramp up internet traffic, which is the driving force behind internet platforms’ ad revenues and live-streaming e-commerce. The latter was worth 1.2trn yuan last year, an 197% increase from the year before.

The second target of the CAC’s campaign is celebrity itself. The new rules create an official blacklist of celebrities that bans all mention of the names included. This will formalise the treatment that Mr Huo and many other stars have received after committing social improprieties or wrongdoing such as tax evasion. Permanent cancellation is becoming part of China’s entertainment landscape. On November 23rd the China Association of Performing Arts published a list of 88 internet celebrities who had committed some form of transgression. A common offence was showing support for Kris Wu, arrested this year on suspicion of rape. Weibo, a Twitter-like service, was forced to ban 145 celebrity accounts in August for infractions such as “insulting and slandering martyrs and inciting illegal gatherings”.

The tightening grip is ostensibly part of President Xi Jinping’s “common prosperity” initiative. It is an attempt to make the country more equitable after years of rapid growth that created a vast digital economy dominated by several internet platforms, in particular e-commerce giant Alibaba and gaming and social-media group Tencent. Over the past year Mr Xi has made clear his plan to take control of the internet industry. The entertainment crackdown under way stems from the government’s desire to cap the “absurd financial gains” made by internet celebrities, says Enchi Chang, a digital marketing specialist.

Yet there is also a more political motivation. China’s Communist Party has grown increasingly uncomfortable with the ability of huge internet stars and their fans to communicate beyond the scope of its control. Take, for example, the country’s massive fan groups. These have in recent years taken up political causes, such as defending Hong Kong from anti-government protesters. Collective action, more than criticism, is something the party fears and suppresses actively, says Jonathan Sullivan of the University of Nottingham. “The potential for large groups of people acting in concert is a constant concern,” he says.

The upending of celebrity culture will have a big impact on China’s internet groups. The country’s fan economy, which combines entertainment and consumption, was expected to be worth about $1trn by 2023. This income is shared across a wide range of companies, advertisers, consumer brands and individual celebrities. If the new advertising rules are strictly enforced, companies such as Kuaishou and Bilibili, a video-streaming service, will be hit. Both groups enjoyed a rapid rise in their ad revenues last year, when total online ad revenues in China hit 767bn yuan.

How will the companies respond? The most outrageous internet stunts, attracting millions of viewers and generating strong e-commerce sales, have become an increasingly important business for groups such as ByteDance and Kuaishou. Now they will probably block some of the most problematic content, says an industry executive. One manager at an online platform says companies will move away from hiring big stars for particular performances. Internet traffic will fall.

A purge on programming is already under way. For example iQiYi, China’s Netflix, said in August that it will no longer feature talent shows or venues where fans can vote for stars, calling them an unhealthy trend despite their wild popularity. The company’s New York-listed shares have tumbled by almost 60% since mid-year when the campaign against entertainment began to take shape. Douyin, Weibo, Kuaishou and other platforms have already shut down their celebrity-ranking lists, venues where fans often paid to buy products in order to support their favourite stars.

One senior executive at an internet group notes that the government’s moves do command significant public support. Many parents in China agree with the party’s view of online entertainment as vacuous, and even dangerous for young people. Regulators around the world are grappling with how to deal with potentially harmful internet content. But Mr Xi’s drive for a more orderly internet is as extreme as it is swift. Mr Huo’s millions of fans will find few opportunities to voice their opposition to watching their favourite star disappear into a censorious mist.

Score the Ugg slippers and boots celebrities love in Cyber Monday sales - Page Six

blogsjga.blogspot.com

Black Friday may be over, but there’s no need to say “ugh” if you missed out on snagging some celebrity-loved Uggs.

Countless A-listers are fans of the brand’s snuggly shoes, with stars like Rihanna, Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid — just to name a few — all having stepped out in the shearling styles.

But you won’t need a Hollywood budget to score the same shoes on Cyber Monday 2021, as Nordstrom and Ugg are both offering savings of up to 40% on several styles.

Celebrities and Dictators: Akon, Nicki Minaj, and Others Performed for Corrupt Officials - TeenVogue.com

The U.S. seized many of Obiang's assets in 2014, saying that through “relentless embezzlement and extortion… Obiang shamelessly looted his government and shook down businesses in his country to support his lavish lifestyle, while many of his fellow citizens lived in extreme poverty.” (As the U.S. asserted in a September announcement detailing how some of the seized funds will be used, Obiang “used his position and influence to amass more than $300 million worth of assets through corruption and money laundering.”) Other countries have also accused Obiang of gargantuan corruption. The U.K. recently sanctioned Obiang directly for reportedly soliciting bribes and corrupt contracting arrangements. And France and Switzerland have moved to seize his assets purchased via corruption.

All of this has taken place while Obiang, now vice president, and his dictatorial father oversee a regime that arguably rivals North Korea in terms of brutality. Not only is the government accused of wide-scale prisoner torture and repression (with state-run media referring to the dictator as a “god”), but more than half the residents have no access to things like clean water and nearly 80% of the country lives in poverty. And that reality is reflected in things like maternal mortality rates and gender inequality (where Equatorial Guinea scores worse than places like Cambodia or Tajikistan, according to the U.N.).

To be fair to Ludacris, Kingston, and the others, it’s unclear how much they knew about the regime before they agreed to perform at Obiang’s birthday party. (It’s also unclear how much they were paid to attend. None of their representatives responded to my questions.) But their willingness to perform for one of the world’s worst kleptocrats is symptomatic of a bigger trend we’ve seen blossom over the past decade: American celebrities agreeing to take money to perform for dictators and their families — for regimes that stand against the progressive policies many of these celebrities claim to support.

In just the past decade, for instance, we’ve seen Nicki Minaj travel to Angola to schmooze with Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of Angola’s former dictator, and a woman recently accused of large-scale money laundering linked to her father’s brutal, 38-year reign. (Minaj posted a photo of herself with dos Santos on Instagram, writing, “GIRL POWER!!!!! This motivates me soooooooooo much!!!!") Elsewhere, Jennifer Lopez performed at a private birthday party for the longstanding dictator in Turkmenistan, with Lopez singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” for him. Kanye West even got in on the action, performing for the wildly corrupt family of Kazakhstan’s dictator.

Some dictatorships tend to gravitate toward American celebrities more than others. The family of former Libyan despot Muammar Gaddafi, for instance, shelled out millions to celebrities like Mariah Carey, Usher, and Nelly Furtado. Even Beyoncé took some of the Gaddafi family’s riches, reportedly making upwards of $2 million to perform for the dictator’s family at New Year’s 2009. (Beyoncé’s publicist said in 2011 that the singer later donated the proceeds, while Furtado, Carey, and Usher either returned the proceeds, made separate donations to human rights causes, or promised to do so in the future. Lopez apologized, though there’s no indication she returned any proceeds, while neither Minaj nor West addressed their performances or returned any funds.)
