The daily gossip: June 29 2023 - The Week

Madonna spent several days in the ICU after developing a "serious bacterial infection" on Saturday, her manager, Guy Oseary, confirmed. "Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care," Oseary said. "A full recovery is expected." According to Page Six, the singer was "found unresponsive" and rushed to a hospital in New York City, and she was "intubated for at least one night before having the tube removed." But CNN reported on Thursday she has been discharged from the hospital and transported to her New York home, with a source telling the outlet, "She's in the clear." The start of Madonna's world tour has been postponed, her manager also said. "We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows," Oseary shared. The tour was scheduled to begin on July 15 in Vancouver.

Transfer gossip: Spurs running risk of Chelsea move for Kane; City plot 34m Liverpool hijack - Yahoo Finance UK

Tottenham are taking an almighty ‘risk’ when it comes to Chelsea and Harry Kane while City attempt another hijack, this time of Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd all at once.

THE CHELSEA KANE ‘RISK’
We thought The Telegraph may be above this sort of thing but apparently not (we absolutely recognise the irony of this). Harry Kane is building a house quite close to the Chelsea training ground. ALERT.

The report states: ‘Chelsea have been alerted to the fact that Harry Kane has commissioned the building of a sizeable new family home close to Wentworth Golf Cub, to the west of London, and just 15 miles from the club’s Cobham training ground…’

And to add some extra spice to that non-story, readers are reminded of the manager Kane loves who will be at the Chelsea helm. ‘…where Mauricio Pochettino will soon be in charge.’ Done deal.

‘There is no suggestion that an offer from Chelsea is imminent,’ the report continues. Well quite.

Telegraph journalist Matt Law then tweeted saying Spurs are ‘running the risk of Chelsea making a very serious play for Kane’ by letting him see out his contract.

Well sure, there’s a risk that any club could make a ‘serious play’, but earlier this month Law also explained why there is “no chance” Kane would move to Chelsea.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is trying to lure Kane to Bayern. The Spurs striker is interested, and the Bundesliga club are reportedly set to up their initial £60m bid to £80m.

Munich is a long way from west London though. May as well just join Chelsea.

MAN CITY HIJACK
Manchester City are attempting another hijack having failed to steal Declan Rice away from Arsenal – if indeed they ever actually wanted the West Ham star, hmmm.

Anyway, not quite such a blatant one this time, with Fabrizio Romano claiming they’ve ‘entered the race’ for Gabri Veiga.

The 21-year-old registered 11 goals and four assists in La Liga with Real Madrid, Liverpool and Chelsea all thought to be tempted by his £34m release clause.

Wednesday’s gossip added Manchester United into that mix and now Manchester City have entered the running.

Romano tweeted: ‘Manchester City have entered the race for Spanish talent Gabri Veiga after pulling out of Declan Rice deal. He’s one of the options now being considered at the club. #MCFC

‘Liverpool and Chelsea remain interested but City also informed now. Release clause: €40m.’

MOUNTING TALKS
Chelsea and Manchester United appear to have let bygones be bygones and have had a good chat over a deal for Mason Mount. No-one wants this deal to fall through, except perhaps the Chelsea fans with their heads screwed on.

Fabrizio Romano says there is ‘confidence’ of a deal being done after the ‘first round of direct contract’.

He adds: ‘Man Utd and Chelsea will talk again soon. All parties consider this week as crucial moment to make final decision between United and Chelsea.’

The 'Gossip Girl' Reboot Was a Failure Except for This Character - Collider

Whether it was lackluster, sequined storylines or characters that were difficult to become invested in, the reboot of Gossip Girl has widely been considered a disappointment, especially standing in the shadow of its lauded predecessor. The reboot, which aired from 2021 to 2023, tried to atone for the sins of the original series’ lack of diversity. But instead of thoughtful representations, the show often felt like a checklist– a polyamorous couple, check; main characters of color, check; queer main characters, check; rich characters acknowledging their excessive wealth, check. And then, of course, there was Gossip Girl whose identity is revealed in the first episode—she’s actually a she and a teacher of the students whose lives she uses as fodder for her unrealized writing dreams, all the while claiming she’s doing so in order to correct their entitled behavior.

For a reboot that tried to amend for some of the problematic aspects of its senior, it created its own troubling dimensions as well–like a storyline where a student becomes sexually involved with a teacher, only for the teacher to, for the most part, come out of it unscathed and not meeting justice. While the original “GG” was made for the age of blogs, the new, but not improved, GG is of the Instagram era, where online clout is king to the uber-rich teenagers that treat Manhatten like their own personal playground. But in the midst of all the city lights, noise of yet again another argument, and storylines that reveal a new Gossip Girl trying and stumbling to find itself, there is one jewel in all the chaos: Luna La (ZiĂłn Moreno).

Who Is Luna La?

Image via HBO

Luna, a transgender character who enjoys the same hedonism and treachery that New York City offers just as much as her peers, is the series's overlooked success. What’s extraordinary about Luna is how her identity as a trans person, which has been highly politicized recently, is portrayed as being so ordinary. While her identity as a trans woman is acknowledged, she’s not defined by it or contained to it. She’s a person who happens to be trans. Luna has goals; she wants to be a celebrity stylist. Luna has a sex life just like her classmates; she’s able to act upon her desires and is able to do so fully as herself. Luna has her own story; she and her mother have a complicated relationship, as many of her friends have complicated relationships with their parents. And Luna is always able to be herself and nothing more; she never has to grandstand or be a learning opportunity for viewers.

Previous Trans Representation on Television

Image via Netflix

Luna has set a new benchmark for trans characters to come. Before, most trans characters’ entire presence on television and film revolved around their identity. One of the first examples of a trans character on television was Robert Reed playing Pat Caddison on Medical Center in 1975. By today’s standards, a cis man playing a trans woman wouldn’t be accepted, but at the time it was groundbreaking television. Pat was respected by the other characters and was treated compassionately by them. All in the Family, a show with pugnacious Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor), even offers a sympathetic representation of a trans character, although it didn’t use the term “trans” and still referred to Beverly, the trans character, as “he.” But considering the times, Beverly was still treated like a human being and wasn’t relegated to being a joke or oddity, but instead as a person with a heart. The Jeffersons even featured a trans character and her storyline culminates in acceptance and friendship.

Twin Peaks offered a glimpse at a trans character who in many ways is Luna’s spiritual predecessor. David Duchovny plays Denise Bryson, a former coworker of Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) who formerly presented as a man but has revealed herself to be a trans woman. How this character relates to Luna is by how her revelation of her true identity is handled: “Okay,” says Dale casually upon Denise informing him of her being a trans woman. Denise’s identity wasn’t treated as some grand reveal, but instead as a casual acceptance that Dale’s former coworker is a trans woman. The casualty in regard to being transgender that Denise was shown in Twin Peaks evolved into the nonissue of Luna’s identity that she wasn’t defined by in Gossip Girl.

Perhaps one of the breakthrough trans roles was brought to us by Laverne Cox as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black. Cox played a main character on Orange Is the New Black, and through her, viewers were able to glimpse into the trans experience. Sophia is shown throughout various stages of her journey. But the show also shows the harshness that people who are trans can experience. The success of the series finally provided audiences with a trans character who took up more space than just an episode or as a side character.

Luna Is Part of a New Generation of Trans Characters

Image via HBO Max

Luna’s existence isn’t treated as controversial or requiring her to divulge her experiences in her transition. Her character is revolutionary in that, in an age of growing right-wing attacks against trans people, she’s able to freely live her life. Many trans characters before he had to suffer in order to convey their humanity; Beverly from All in the Family was murdered at the end of the episode. Instead, Luna’s issues don’t pertain to her life as a trans woman but instead fixated on the same vapidity as her peers, and that’s refreshing. Her biggest problems are dealing with her narcissistic mother, being in a friend group where each member, except maybe Aki (Evan Mock), is self-involved, trying to make herself known as a stylist, and enduring whatever it is that Gossip Girl writes next. But not once is her existence as a trans person treated as a source of strife or conflict. It’s as if the show allowed Luna to exist within the eye of the storm; sure, the show outside of her had many shortcomings, but she was able to exist apart from many of its failures.

We Needed More Luna

Image via HBO

However, while Gossip Girl crafted this wonderful trans character, it did let her down by not utilizing her enough. Yes, Luna is a main character, but she’s not a main-main character. While she definitely has a place in the spoiled brood friendship circle, she’s still more of a supporting component to characters like queen bee Julien (Jordan Alexander). Even in the finale when Luna stands up for herself by stepping out of Julian’s shadow, she doesn’t get to enjoy her success in the same way. The show ended in Rome, which felt random and out of place with the previous scene as if the cast and crew were wanting to go to Rome so they set the final scenes there as a last hurrah. The main-main characters are enjoying all the Eternal City has to offer. We see signs in Rome of Luna modeling in a new campaign for clothing, but she’s still not really there. It’s as if despite her character having this major achievement, she’s still peripheral.

Looking back at its two seasons, there’s really own one episode that feels like it was written with Luna in the forefront: season 2’s “Y Lu’s MamĂĄ TambiĂ©n.” In the episode, we learn why Luna has such a difficult relationship with her mother. Her mother, an actress who’s trying to revive her career, feels threatened by women because she sees them as competitors, which includes her own daughter. After the typical reboot Gossip Girl drama, they finally talk about why their relationship is so complicated. Her mother revealed that she didn’t want a daughter but got one anyways. And Luna is finally able to accept that perhaps her relationship with her mother will always be frayed. Watching her mother finally open up, viewers probably expect it to lead into a conversation about Luna being trans, but it never does. Instead, her mother airs her complicated feelings about having a daughter but never questions the legitimacy of her having a daughter. Luna being trans isn’t a point of contention in their relationship. Her identity is unquestionably accepted. Gossip Girl, in spite of all of its faults, displayed a wherewithal to not make Luna and her mother’s moment be about Luna being trans; they’re able to have a complicated mother-daughter relationship like any cis mother and daughter could have.

Image via HBO

In an interview with Refinery29, Moreno, who plays Luna, spoke about how she was happy with how her character was written and represented:

“What’s more, Luna’s story never centered on her identity as a trans woman. For Moreno, who recently turned 28 and transitioned when she was 13, it was refreshing, in a way, to step into the role of a trans character who wasn’t explicitly — or solely — defined by gender identity.‘I have to give a lot of credit to the writers for really not making her story about her being trans at all,’ she says. ‘Of course, I think about it a lot because it’s who I am. But it does not dictate my life and we need more characters that are trans that have stories outside of that, you know? We’re multi-dimensional people.’”

Though Luna didn’t get all the attention she deserved, she is still a giant leap forward for trans characters to follow in her designer high-heel footsteps. Allowing Luna’s trans identity to be just a facet of her personhood is a turning point for trans characters. Trans people, and queer people in general, can be proud of their sexual orientations dn identities, but they also don’t want to be summed up or simplified by them. The reboot of Gossip Girl is an example of how rebooting a series can be a risk that may not pay off, but if there’s anything that can be gleaned from it is that Luna La is a beacon for the trans representation on television and film to follow. Viva Luna!

Transfer Gossip: Man Utd lock on to 26m Bayern star Tuchel wants gone; Leeds target Nott'm Forest star as perfect ... - TEAMtalk

Manchester United are ready to spend just £26m to land a Bayern Munich defender, West Ham plan to use their Declan Rice windfall on three players, while Thursday’s Transfer Gossip claims Leeds want a Nottingham Forest striker as a Patrick Bamford upgrade.

TEN HAG WANTS TO BRING BENJAMIN PAVARD TO MAN UTD

Manchester United are ready to make a move to bring Benjamin Pavard to the club this summer, per a report.

The Red Devils are looking to make a number of stellar signings to help further improve on Erik ten Hag’s squad. Having won the Carabao Cup last season and finished third in the Premier League, they now hope to challenge for the game’s very top honours.

But as it stands, Ten Hag is reportedly working within a limited £120m transfer budget. However, his financial restrictions could soon ease if United satisty FFP requirements – and that could unlock some tasty new arrivals at Old Trafford.

To that end, a first signing of the summer is nearing in the form of goalkeeper Andre Onana. However, not everyone is happy at his impending move from Inter with boss Simone Inzaghi reportedly registering his anger at the impending sale of his star man to United.

Nonetheless, United are cracking on with their summer recruitment drive. And the United boss is also hoping to get his hands on a new midfielder, a new striker and a new defender.

The Red Devils were seemingly in the running to sign Napoli star Kim Min-jae. However, the South Korean star is now reportedly destined to sign for Bayern Munich – much to Ten Hag’s chagrin.

However, a Plan B appears to now be in the works in the form of Pavard.

Bayern boss Tuchel wants Man Utd target Pavard gone

The versatile France international has been cleared to leave Bayern Munich this summer. He no longer figures in boss Thomas Tuchel’s plans and they’re seemingly willing to offload him for a fee of around £26m (€30m).

Initially linked with Liverpool, now Football Transfers claims Manchester United are readying an approach of their own.

And Ten Hag is reportedly keen on the 27-year-old World Cup winner as an upgrade for the departing Harry Maguire.

Capable of playing at both centre-half and right-back, Ten Hag could also deploy him as cover for Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Diogo Dalot.

Furthermore, any move for the 49-times capped France star would not break the bank. He currently earns a modest £85,000 a week at Bayern, a figure United would be willing to match.

Bayern are unlikely to stand in his way, meaning any deal should be easy for United to reach.

His arrival, however, will also allow Bayern to push through the signing of Kim from Napoli for a fee of £52m.

WEST HAM READY TO SPEND DECLAN RICE FUNDS ON TRIO

West Ham want to sign three players with the impending Declan Rice transfer windfall.

The Hammers skipper is on the brink of leaving the London Stadium for Arsenal in what will be a record fee between English clubs. Indeed, the Gunners have reached an agreement worth an initial £100m, with a further £5m in add-ons.

That comes after Manchester City ultimately dropped out of the race for the England star.

For Arsenal, the capture of Rice will complete a brilliant week for the Gunners. They have already welcomed Kai Havertz from Chelsea; but the addition of Rice will mean transfer objective No 1 of the summer is now done.

The arrival of the 24-year-old star will hopefully take Arsenal to the next level.

But for West Ham, the departure of their talismanic star leaves behind a seismic hole.

Nonetheless, they will have plenty of cash in the bank to strengthen their squad. And according to the Daily Mirror, boss David Moyes has his eyes on three players to strengthen his squad using those funds.

First up, the Hammers are looking to sign Everton star Amadou Onana as Rice’s replacement. He has shone in the Premier League since a move to Goodison last summer. Costing £33m from Lille, the Toffees could comfortably sell him for £50m-plus.

In addition, West Ham also hope to get their hands on Chelsea reject Denis Zakaria. The Swiss star spent last season on loan at Chelsea from Juventus. However, he does not figure in either club’s plans and a move should be relatively straightforward.

And finally, Moyes hopes to land England defender Harry Maguire from Man Utd. He’s been cleared to leave Old Trafford after falling out of favour. A fee of just £30m could persuade United to sell the 30-year-old centre-half.

LEEDS EYE DEPARTING FOREST STRIKER AS BAMFORD UPGRADE

Leeds United are reportedly planning to swoop on Nottingham Forest to sign Emmanuel Dennis.

The 26-year-old joined the Tricky Trees from Watford last summer for a fee of around £10m.

One of 30 new players to step through the doors at the City Ground last season, Dennis made 25 appearances for Forest in all competitions.

However, the eight-times Nigerian striker found the going tough, registering just two goals for Steve Cooper’s side.

Emmanuel Dennis No 25 of Nottingham Forest during the Premier League match Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest at Anfield, Liverpool Emmanuel Dennis of Nottingham Forest

And with Taiwo Awoniyi now firmly established as first choice, Forest are ready to cash in on Dennis.

Now according to reports in the Daily Express, Leeds are ready to swoop in for the striker.

Leeds were relegated from the Premier League last season, ending their three-year stay among the elite.

However, they are reportedly ready to swoop for Dennis as they look to return to the top tier at the first time of asking.

And the Whites reportedly see the striker as an ideal replacement for the misfiring Patrick Bamford, who struggled in front of goal last season.

The one-time capped England striker managed six goals in 31 appearances – but was guilty of several big misses.

Now a deal could be struck to bring in Dennis to provide them with a potential upgrade.

Forest will not stand in Dennis’ way and could allow him to move on for a fee similar to what they paid.

Cambridge: Racism gossip and stress claims at NHS unit - bbc.com

Contributed

An NHS rehabilitation unit accused of "covering up issues" also faced allegations of racism, gossip and bad attitudes, documents have revealed.

The 36-bed Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit (CRU) is an inpatient facility where whistleblowing complaints were raised about bullying.

Staff session papers showed allegations that "racism was identified in one group as something that must stop".

The trust that runs CRU said discrimination would not be tolerated.

The BBC previously reported documents related to whistleblowing claims that alleged management bullied staff who flagged concerns about shortages and unsafe practice.

The new documents, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, relate to staff sessions that took place between October and December last year.

PA Media

One of the sections under the heading "things to stop" was "poor behaviours (including racism and gossip)".

The document's author said: "Bad attitude, negative behaviours also came up in almost every session as something everyone must stop.

"'It's not my patient' came up in this conversation too, around how this stems from a poor attitude.

"Racism was identified in one group as something that must stop and gossip was mentioned in nearly every session.

"Unhelpful talking about people with some clear examples of where gossip had really hurt people. The sense is its not from everyone - but the few with regular poor behaviours effect everyone.

"Other words used were stop - guilt, anger, fear, criticism, ego, laziness, jealousy, cliques, sniping and comments behind backs."

In a section about stress, the report said: "There was a sense of overwhelm, people mentioned the fear of failing, of not being able to take breaks (and jealousy when others could)."

Staff also reported feeling a "pressure to admit" patients.

"They felt the ward takes anyone it's given, even when its not always suitable and is far from rehab", the document noted.

A spokesman for the trust said: "We held a series of listening exercises with colleagues at the Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit to better understand the issues staff were experiencing.

"A number of important issues including the acuity of patients they are being asked to care for, and the ongoing difficulties of providing support and treatment while services remain under extreme strain, were shared.

"They also raised serious concerns about behaviour and any form of discrimination is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

"The improvement programme - co-designed with staff - is continuing and we thank colleagues for being so open and honest about their experiences and for the ongoing dedication they show to our patients."

Gossip: Producer Badly Insulted The Hero!.. - Greatandhra

Gossip: Producer Badly Insulted The Hero!

Producers are often bound by the demands of big heroes. But when it comes to small heroes, many times the producers do have the upper hand.

In this particular case, a small producer made a film with a lesser-known hero, expecting support from a renowned production banner. However, it has been rumored in Tollywood that the hero was subjected to constant humiliation and disrespect.

One aspect of this mistreatment is cutting campaign costs. However, the situation became even more demeaning when the hero's team had to stay in a hotel for campaigning in Visakhapatnam.

Although the producer had booked the rooms, he made certain things clear only to the hotel management but not the hero.

Consequently, the hotel staff informed them that only the room rents would be covered by the producer, while the food bills should be paid by the hero. This revelation not only shocked the hero during the check-out process but also left him feeling deeply humiliated.

Furthermore, the hero faced an additional setback when there was a last-minute reduction of forty percent in the originally agreed remuneration.

Although the hero seemed unable to voice any objections, he made the decision to see the release of his film.

However, considering the treatment received from this producer, it raises the question of whether any other hero would be willing to allocate dates to them in the future.
