Dear Miss Manners: About three years ago, I began a relationship with a man I am head-over-heels in love with, and we have been living together for two years.
Early in our relationship, my “best friend” (we have been like family for half of our lives) heard some gossip about my man, believed it totally for the truth, and completely changed her attitude toward him. She refused to tell me what was said about him or who said it, only that when the relationship failed, she would be there for me.
Shortly afterward, I learned from someone else what was said and who said it: a well-known liar and gossipmonger who had taken tidbits of truth and added a great deal of untruth and speculation. I could not believe my friend would even listen to someone with such a reputation for deviousness, first of all, and secondly that she didn’t have my back.
Needless to say, our friendship has become cold and distant. I have attempted to restore the friendship by extending invitations (which are not accepted) and engaging in positive, hopeful conversation about my life (which is shut down). We do talk occasionally, but it is now limited to polite conversation about family and work.
My boyfriend proposed a few months ago, and gave me a beautiful diamond that she has yet to acknowledge. Her only statement to me about my engagement was, “I just want you to be happy,” which was cloaked in her typical voice of doom.
We are beginning to make plans for our wedding. Should I send her an invitation?
Because a wedding is a major life event, determinations about whom to invite should take a medium- to long-term view of each individual’s status.
Siblings we squabbled with and hung up on last week are still invited. Siblings we broke ties with decades ago over their treatment of Father’s third wife are likely not. Friends with whom we were, recently, on intimate terms are still considered to be so, even if we no longer see each other every week.
You, not Miss Manners, will have to determine whether the person in question is still a friend, or whether the air quotes indicate a permanent change of status.
Dear Miss Manners: I have a family member who is an attention hog. She somehow always steers the conversation to showcase how she is always the rightest and wisest in situations. Every one of her stories ends in how she was right, and everyone else “saw the light” after they listened to her.
Listening to these stories is draining and I don’t want to be rude, but I can’t avoid talking to her. Is there any way to stop this narcissistic point of view?
Don’t listen. Or, more accurately, adopt a facial attitude that is sweet but distracted. You want to deprive your relation of the pleasure of being listened to — without, and this is a point Miss Manners stresses — putting yourself in a position to be accused of anything worse than being absent-minded.
The Venice Film Festival returns this week for its 78th year.
Bong Joon-Ho, director of Parasite, has been appointed as the President of the Jury.
It's the first time a South Korean has been named as the festival's top juror.
After last year's festival was scaled back due to COVID-19, many celebrities have already flocked to Venice.
The festivities were kicked off with a three-day event ahead of the Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda, show with many of those in attendance believed to be attending the film festival too.
Kourtney Kardashian and her boyfriend, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, have been packing in the public displays of affection during their Italian getaway, attending this week's fashion show alongside Kardashian-Jenner matriarch Kris Jenner and her boyfriend Corey Gamble.
The couple were also photographed attending the film festival on August 31.
There were plenty of musicians in the floating city too, with Ciara, Doja Cat, and Normani pictured attending the fashion show.
Jennifer Hudson, star of new Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, took to the catwalk to deliver her own rendition of the opera classic "Nessun Dorma."

Stars like Luis Fonsi, Bebe Rexha, and Saweetie were also spotted in the audience.
Jennifer Lopez was a sartorial highlight, arriving at Sunday's fashion show wearing head-to-toe Dolce & Gabbana, complete with cape and crown.
Catwalk veteran Heidi Klum was also there, not just to observe but also to support her daughter Leni Klum, who was making her runway debut for the Italian luxury fashion house.
Screen icon Helen Mirren stunned in an elaborate gown featuring an embellished gold corset, sheer sleeves and a skirt printed with Renaissance paintings.
Mirren was later seen dancing with "WAP" rapper Megan Thee Stallion at an after-party.
Princess Diana's niece Lady Kitty Spencer was also in attendance, having previously walked the red carpet at the film festival in 2019.
Princess Diana biopic Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, is the hottest ticket at the festival. It follows the late Princess of Wales during the Christmas holiday when she decided to end her marriage and has already been tipped for Oscar recognition.
Actors January Jones, Zoe Saldana, and Sydney Sweeney have all also been photographed in the city ahead of the festival having attended the fashion show.
Vin Diesel, Kate Bosworth and former first lady of France Carla Bruni have been spotted.
Adriana Lima and Kirsten Dunst wore masks as they were photographed arriving at the film festival earlier today.

I know you’re still filming now. What’s life on set like and what do you do between takes?
Usually laugh and make fun of each other. We just have a good time. I can complain all day about having to stay in New York for the summer and wanting to be closer to the ocean or on the Amalfi coast or whatever, but those are first world problems. We’re making the best out of it, balancing work and having fun, and trying to make the show the best it can be.
This is, of course, your first role. Has it made you want to keep acting?
Yeah, for sure! It’s shown me how things work in the industry and that’s been inspiring. I’ve learned so much. I’m soaking everything up like a sponge.
How have viewers been responding to your character so far?
I think they kind of forget that we’re real people sometimes [laughs]. I mean I would trip out too if I was in the middle of watching a show that I was really into and I saw the actor on the street somewhere in their normal clothes. It’s funny. They’re relatively nice though. I would say 98% of the comments so far have been positive so that’s good.
In the past, you’ve also talked about releasing a coffee table book of your photography. Is that still in the works?
I keep postponing it. I don’t feel like the time is right yet because I’m young. It’s something that I want to look back on and say, “That was such an interesting time,” but I feel like I’m still in that time. Right now, I’m just collecting memories and photos.
Have you found much time for surfing while in New York?
Yeah, there are waves in Montauk, Rockaway, Long Beach. I’ve not gotten to surf as much as I want to obviously, so I’m really looking forward to going back to Hawaii hopefully at the end of the year.
And how does it now feel to be one of Pandora’s new global muses?
It feels so good to be recognized alongside this incredible roster of people that they’ve chosen for this campaign. Partnering up with Pandora has been a great experience and they really listened to what we have to say which is nice. It’s not always like that.
What’s your favorite piece from their Wearing Occasions collection?
That necklace I wore and posted about. I usually wear a few different chains and when I saw that I thought, “That’s me!”
Pandora’s Wearing Occasions collection is available to shop now. Gossip Girl is now streaming on HBO Max.
