Celebrity Tweets Honor Sean Connery's Legacy After His Death At 90 - Bustle

blogsjga.blogspot.com

Hollywood's first James Bond, Oscar winner Sean Connery, has died at age 90, his family confirmed to the BBC on Saturday, Oct. 31. According to the Scottish actor's son, Connery had been "unwell for some time," and died peacefully in his sleep while in the Bahamas. Both those who knew him personally, as well as those who were simply fans, mourned the loss on social media, with the earliest celebrity tributes to Connery coming from such stars as Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, Elizabeth Hurley, and Cary Elwes.

Daniel Craig, who took over the 007 role in 2006's Casino Royale, released a statement on Twitter. "It is with such sadness that I heard of the passing of one of the true greats of cinema," he wrote. "Sir Sean Connery will be remembered as Bond and so much more. He defined an era and a style. The wit and charm he portrayed on screen could be measured in mega watts; he helped create the modern blockbuster. He will continue to influence actors and film-makers alike for years to come. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones. Wherever he is, I hope there is a golf course."

Earlier, Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli also reacted to the news in a joint Twitter statement: "We are devastated by the news of the passing of Sir Sean Connery. He was and shall always be remembered as the original James Bond whose indelible entrance into cinema history began when he announced those unforgettable words — 'The name's Bond… James Bond' — he revolutionized the world with his gritty and witty portrayal of the sexy and charismatic secret agent," the pair wrote in a joint statement. "He is undoubtedly largely responsible for the success of the film series and we shall be forever grateful to him."

Fellow actors, such as Hugh Jackman and Elizabeth Hurley shared classic photos. In his tweet, Jackman noted that he "grew up idolizing" Connery, calling him a "legend on screen and off." For her part, Hurley referred to the actor as "glorious" in her memorial. Later, Viola Davis called Connery "our James Bond icon."

Connery's United Kingdom brethren, including Cary Elwes and First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon, also paid their respects online. With "a broken heart," Elwes honored "the only Bond. From Scotland with Love." Meanwhile, Sturgeon referred to Connery as one of Scotland's "best loved sons."

His The Hunt for Red October co-star Sam Neill remembered every day on set being an "object lesson in how to act on screen." John Cleese, who worked with Connery on 1981's Time Bandits, tweeted that he was "the only one of us to find The Holy Grail."

The family of the late Sir Roger Moore, who succeeded Connery as Bond in 1972, noted that the actor "always maintained Sean was the best ever James Bond."

Arnold Schwarzenegger reminded his followers that "one of the greatest actors of all time" was also once a "bodybuilder who placed in the Mr. Universe contest."

Filmmakers, including Paul Feig and Kevin Smith, also weighed in. While Feig remembered the actor, who also starred in The Untouchables, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and The Rock, as effortlessly suave and cool, Smith shared memories involving his own late father.

After sharing a thread of "great Sean Connery movies," CNN's Jake Tapper made note of the many bad Sean Connery impressions sure to come — including his own, at least according to his wife — in the wake of the sad news. Star Trek actor George Takei also shared a lighthearted, pun-filled tribute, referencing some of the "suave" Connery's films. For his part, author Stephen King referenced Connery's "first starring role, as a washed-up boxer."

As the tweets show, people are both shaken and stirred by the loss of a Hollywood icon.

Halloween 2020: Best Celebrity Costumes - Teen Vogue

blogsjga.blogspot.com

Another Halloween has come and gone, and while this year’s celebrations might've looked a little different without the usual trick-or-treating or huge parties, there were still plenty of ways to get festive. And some of the biggest stars pulled out all of the stops during Spooky Szn this year.

While several celebs opted for iconic characters or pop culture references, like Chrissy Teigen’s Black Swan nod, other stars paid tribute to each other. Ciara went full Cardi B (with her son donning an Offset costume), while Lil Nas X channeled his inner Nicki Minaj. And one of the most memorable takeaways from Halloween 2020? Saweetie used the holiday to recreate the Bootylicious album cover from Destiny’s Child.

For all of the star-studded costumes, check out our roundup below — and feel free to take any ghostly inspiration that may come your way.

Ryan Destiny

Ryan’s Halloween costume was a perfect copy/paste of Lauryn Hill’s 1999 Honey Magazine cover. Amazing!

Tabria Majors

Model Tabria Majors pulled out all the stops this year and recreated nearly every iconic Beyoncé moment in history with a 10-minute long music video aptly titled ##BEYLLOWEEN. The project soon garnered millions of views and countless compliments. “I wanted to do something different this year for Halloween and pay tribute to someone that I admire and respect so much—BEYONCÉ,” Tabria wrote in the caption. Pretty sure she just won Halloween!

Cardi B & Kulture

Cardi turned Halloween into her own personal photo shoot, morphing into absolute mythical royalty as Medusa. Her daughter Kulture also got in on the festivities, donning a glammed up Wonder Woman costume.

Gigi Hadid & Zayn Malik

Gigi showed off her love of gaming with her futuristic blue catsuit and the perfect caption “Choose your player.” In a post on her IG story, she shared her first public family photo with Zayn and their new baby; the singer-songwriter was dressed up in full Slytherin gear, while baby Zigi sported a Hulk costume. Too cute!

Bella Hadid

The model got extra creative this year and decked herself out as a Roy Lichtenstein painting, writing in her caption: “POV: your new Lichtenstein piece came in and she...uh...came to life last nite..... she won’t stop seducing you thru the security camera until you let her in through the front gate.”

Lizzo

Some memes are just begging for a Halloween costume. Lizzo reminded fans to vote and gave them a laugh while dressing up as the fly on Mike Pence’s head from the Vice Presidential debate.

Ciara

After stunning as Cardi B earlier during Halloweekend, Ciara also paid tribute to Megan Thee Stallion and later, Nicki Minaj.

Gabrielle Union & Dwyane Wade

Gabrielle and Dwyane took the family costume to the next level with their daughter Kaavia James by dressing up as every ingredient you need to make s’mores. Endlessly adorable!

Kevin & Danielle Jonas

Did someone say family Halloween? This Jonas crew went as Minions, with the exception of one of their daughters who seemed to prefer a pastel pixie outfit (TBH we get it).

Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, & Madelaine Petsch

Speaking of group costumes, the Riverdale ladies went full Powerpuff Girls for Halloween this year, and they did not disappoint!

Naomi Osaka

The star tennis player showed her love of Codename: Kids Next Door by dressing up as Abigail Lincoln AKA Numbuh 5. Perfection!

Demi Lovato

Taking spooky season to heart, Demi went full vampira — and was her own MUA for the occasion!

Cole Sprouse

Paying tribute to all of our childhoods, the Riverdale actor went as The Man in the Yellow Hat — with Curious George by his side, of course.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd dialed it back to the ‘90s with an homage to Eddie Murphy’s character in The Nutty Professor.

Kylie Jenner

The reality star kicked off Halloweekend with a group costume fit for the ‘gram: The Power Rangers, before recreating one of her childhood costumes alongside sis Kendall. Never one to pass up an opportunity to dress up all weekend long, Kylie showed off an elaborate King Cobra costume on Halloween night.

Stormi Webster

Of course Kylie’s mini-me seems to love Halloween as much as she does! The toddler sported a purple Minion costume, looking as adorable as ever.

Kris Jenner

The matriarch of the Kardashian-Jenner fam is also all about that Halloween life. Case in point? Her absolutely iconic Jack Skellington costume.

Kendall Jenner

In addition to posing with Kylie, the model dressed up as Pamela Anderson à la Barb Wire, with an important message about voting.

Saweetie

“I don’t think you’re ready for this jelly,” Saweetie captioned her perfect homage to Beyoncé. And if that wasn’t enough, she also offered her spin on the “Bootlyicious” music video, much to fans’ delight.

Rico Nasty

Rico Nasty went full-on Joker to ask fans, “Why so serious?”

Ciara

Not only did Ciara channel Cardi B for her costume, she also fully recreated the rapper’s Invasion of Privacy album cover. And if you swipe through the slides, you’ll also find a nail art surprise in order to remind fans to vote.

Marsai Martin

For her Halloween costume, Marsai paid homage to the one and only Rihanna — and even made her very own Vogue cover to go along with it. Award-winning!

Lil Nas X

Introducing….Nas Maraj. We are speechless!

Chrissy Teigen & John Legend

Ever wondered what would happen if the Swan Queen ended up with Spider-Man? We think they make a pretty sweet couple, TBQH.

Halsey

Halsey pulled out all the stops with her Corpse Bride costume, and made the perfect Emily.

Bella Thorne

As the actor wrote on her IG, Grandma probably wouldn’t approve of this Little Red costume.

Mindy Kaling

Mindy traded spooky for adorable this Halloween, dressing up as Devi from her Netflix series, Never Have I Ever. “What’s a’poppin?!” she quipped in the caption. “Do you like my Halloween costume?”

Rosalía

Singer-songwriter Rosalía went with an iconic ‘90s costume and channeled her inner Leeloo, from The Fifth Element. Nailed it!

Bebe Rexha

Continuing with the classic theme, Bebe dressed up as Poison Ivy — with the perfect red hairstyle and all. Happy Halloween indeed!

Celebrities who don’t talk politics: 'Nobody cares' - Fox News

blogsjga.blogspot.com

Many celebrities have endorsed either President Trump or former Vice President Joe Biden in the upcoming 2020 presidential election.

Few stars, on the other hand, have made a conscious choice to never talk about politics whether it be this election or previous ones.

Kevin Hart, Dolly Parton, Danica Patrick and Josh Duhamel are among entertainers who have chosen to focus their energy on their careers rather than get into a blue-versus-red debate.

In 2018, Hart, 41, took a jab at Trump, 74,  during the MTV Video Music Awards because he denounced athletes who decided to kneel during the national anthem as a protest of police brutality.

WHAT HOLLYWOOD HAS SAID ABOUT BIDEN AND TRUMP

The comedian later slammed critics who called his comments political, adding that he stays away from discussing politics altogether.

“People are taking things and trying to turn them into political moments,” he told Essence. “I don’t speak on politics, never have. I speak on what I know.”

Hart continued: “That’s not politics. It’s right from wrong.”

He added: “For me, I know my lane. The day I jump out that lane and do something else is the day your head gets bit off.”

Actress Gillian Anderson has similarly said she doesn’t feel she’s informed enough to speak about U.S. or U.K. politics, having been raised in both places.

“I generally have a tendency to steer away from outright political discussion in interviews, because I am an actor, and there’s so much that I don’t understand, and I don’t for a second feel like I have a right to that platform,” Anderson, 52,  told The Guardian in 2017.

She continued: “I don’t want to get into a discussion about Trump or about Brexit or any of that – I feel it’s best left to people who really understand the very, very complex issue. Not for a second am I going to pitch in, because I don’t really know what it is that I’m talking about. I have opinions, but I don’t think my opinions are more valid because I’m an actor and have more of a platform than others.”

Parton, 73, also prefers to stick to performing rather than engage in politics publicly.

“If I’ve got something to say, I’ll say it, but I don’t want to be dragged into it,” she told The Guardian last year.  "I don’t really like getting up on TV and saying political things. I don’t even want to make a deal out of it, but I want people to know I’m my own individual self.”

The “Jolene” singer added:  “I’ve got as many Republican friends as I’ve got Democrat friends and I just don’t like voicing my opinion on things. I’ve seen things before, like the Dixie Chicks. You can ruin a career for speaking out.”

Reba McEntire has similarly expressed several times that she doesn’t get into politics so that she doesn’t alienate her audience.

Ahead of hosting the ACM Awards in 2019 she told "CBS This Morning," "We've got to keep it light. We've got to keep it fun. No politics. This is fun. This is entertainment. We are in the entertainment business, and that's what we're going to be doing."

In 2017, McEntire, 65, said on “The View” that her “fans would be shocked” if she ever got political on stage.

“I take it this way: They have paid their hard-earned money to come in there and fill a seat — parking, getting something at the concession stand, going to eat before the concert -- and I am there to entertain them, to take their worries away from them,” she said. “So I am not going to give them my political views. It's not my place."

The singer added: “That’s not as important as this is my job to entertain. It shouldn’t be my platform to be up on stage giving my political views.”

JOSH DUHAMEL: 'I STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS BECAUSE NOBODY CARES WHAT I THINK'

Earlier this month, Nikki Bella found herself at the center of a “political debate" after she promoted Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s book on her Instagram account.

The “Total Bellas” star’s promotion of the book came on the heels of Johnson’s endorsement of Biden, 77.

"There's no winning talking about politics, unfortunately," Bella, 36, said on her podcast.

She concluded the discussion with a message to her listeners. "Nikki Bella's account, this is all about positivity, love and light. I embrace everyone's beliefs because I was raised to believe — and I learned on my own — that everyone is gonna have different opinions and beliefs," she said, adding, "That's what makes the world go 'round. We're all never going to think the same."

DWAYNE 'THE ROCK' JOHNSON ENDORSES JOE BIDEN, KAMALA HARRIS – HIS FIRST PUBLIC POLITICAL BACKING

Famed singer Billy Joel has stayed out of politics simply because he believes it draws fans apart.

“I don’t think I’m going to be politically involved,” the “Piano Man” singer told Rolling Stone last year. “I find a lot of people resent celebrities touting their candidate. That can actually turn more people off than it can bring more people in.”

He added: “I try to stay out of politics. I am a private citizen and I have a right to believe in my own political point of view, but I try not to get up on a soapbox and tell people how to think.”

Joel, 71, did, however, admit he’s “not a big fan” of Trump, but “to be fair I don’t have a lot of insight into him.”

Mark Wahlberg has also said celebrities “shouldn’t” talk about politics when “they’re pretty out of touch with the common person” compared to his upbringing.

“People aren’t listening to that anyway. They might buy your CD or watch your movie, but you don’t put food on their table. You don’t pay their bills,” he told Task & Purpose in 2016. “And although I can navigate Hollywood and I love the business and the opportunities it’s afforded me, I also understand what it’s like not to have all that.”

In 2017, Duhamel, 47, similarly told Fox News, “I don’t necessarily think it’s important to tell people how to vote. That’s one thing I don’t do. I don’t like to get involved politically at all. Nobody cares what I think politically.”

He added: “Anybody in entertainment who thinks people care what they think politically are really misinformed. That’s one thing I stay away from. I stay away from politics because nobody cares what I think.”

Professional race car driver Patrick, 38, also stays out of the spotlight when it comes to politics.

"I feel like religion and politics are the two things that you just stay away from," she told FOX Business in 2016. "I'm not going to comment about what I like or don’t like or what people say. But we live in America and it's a free country and you can say whatever you want."

Country singer Blake Shelton once found himself in the hot seat in 2016 after people assumed he supported Trump following an interview with Billboard.

RAPPER LIL WAYNE MEETS WITH TRUMP

Blake Shelton said in 2016 that he would never endorse a presidential candidate.

"I’m not going to have the political conversation with you about Trump, or about Hillary Clinton, but I will tell you this: Whether you love him or hate him, he says what he thinks, and he has proven that you don’t always have to be so afraid. A lot of people are pulling for him, no matter how much Hollywood fights it,” he said.

“The Voice” coach later clarified in a tweet: “Hey before this gets going like it always does... I haven't enforced [sic] ANYBODY for president. And I not going to. I don't do that s--t.

Country singer Carrie Underwood also plans to stay mum about her political views.

“I feel like more people try to pin me places politically,” she told The Guardian last year. “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”

ICE CUBE DEFENDS WORKING WITH TRUMP, AND IS STILL NOT PICKING SIDES

Finally, although Khloe Kardashian’s siblings are very vocal about politics and voting, she continues to stay quiet despite her brother-in-law Kanye West running in the upcoming election.

“With politics I’ve learned to keep my opinions to myself, for once in my life. It’s not that I would never talk about it, but it’s that nobody cares about what I have to say about that," she told The Cut in 2016.

However, she later said, “No, I don’t think he would make a good president” during an appearance on “Chelsea” on Netflix, referring to Trump. The Good American founder has remained silent since then.

She’s Moved From the Upper East Side to ‘Cobble Hill’ - The New York Times

The inspiration for Cecily von Ziegesar’s latest novel? Lice.

About eight years ago, when her two children were in elementary school in Brooklyn, she couldn’t shake the idea that their hair, and her own, were infested with the bloodsucking insects.

“I would go down to the nurse and be like, ‘Can you check my head?’ I was combing my kids’ hair every single night,” von Ziegesar said in an interview. “I heard that if you put mayonnaise on your head and wrapped it in Saran Wrap, that would drown them, so I was doing that to my hair every day.”

A similar lice encounter kicks off her book, “Cobble Hill,” which Atria publishes on Nov. 10, except that instead of a mother of two having a meltdown, it is Stuart Little, a has-been rock star whose wife, Mandy, it is soon revealed, has faked multiple sclerosis so that she can stay in bed and shirk her parental duties of school drop-offs and paying taxes.

If that behavior sounds maniacally self-centered, it’s the kind of character that von Ziegesar, the author of the best-selling young adult series “Gossip Girl,” specializes in — and defends when necessary.

“I love Mandy,” she said, a hint of protectiveness in her voice. “I admire her for having the guts to just be, like, ‘This is what I need to do right now.’”

Call it guts or selfishness or gutsy selfishness, those traits can be found in most of her female characters, von Ziegesar noted, from the scheming Blair Waldorf and the backstabbers who surrounded her in “Gossip Girl” to the four female characters of “Cobble Hill.” In addition to Mandy, there is a British expatriate working at a Condé Nast-esque magazine, a high school nurse with a crush on a student’s parent and an evasive artist.

“I didn’t want them to be characters that you love to hate,” von Ziegesar said.

Those women and their families feel like characters that teenage fans of “Gossip Girl” might have graduated to. After all, since her first book came out in 2002 and the television adaptation began airing in 2007, those fans are now reaching prime adulthood, considering career shifts, buying homes and trading their youthful insecurities for more grown-up ones. That might include, as is the case with these characters, giving up on passions for unfulfilling careers that pay the bills, landing jobs they don’t know how to do but pretend to or learning that maybe they don’t love their spouses as much as they used to — all while agonizing over how other people perceive them.

“I couldn’t write the ‘Gossip Girl’ books now, but I couldn’t have written ‘Cobble Hill’ then,” von Ziegesar, 50, said. “Hopefully I’ve progressed as a writer.”

She herself is a product of the Upper East Side world where “Gossip Girl” is set: Though she grew up on the Upper West Side, she went to school there and had the “funny little experiences of being able to walk around the corner from school and go to my friend’s house,” she recalled. “And I had a few friends whose parents were a little reluctant to let them come over to my house.”

The idea for “Gossip Girl” emerged when von Ziegesar was an editor at the book-packaging company Alloy Entertainment, now a division of Warner Bros. Television Group. At the time, the young adult book market was full of series like “Sweet Valley High” that featured made-up locations. “That was so weird to me,” she said. “Why not write about a real place? It just so happened that the real place that I knew was the Upper East Side.”

Precise sales figures of the “Gossip Girl” books are hard to come by because the first of the series arrived before tracking was made available, but some estimates suggest it has sold over 4 million copies. The TV series ran for six seasons and helped make celebrities out of cast members such as Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley and Ed Westwick. An HBO Max reboot is now in the works.

In 2002, when von Ziegesar’s debut book came out, she had her first child. By the time the TV series was coming to an end in 2012, she had two children who were old enough to be hooked.

“We would watch the show together as a family,” she said from the recently vacated room of her daughter, who is starting her first year at college. “I remember putting my son to bed and he was like, ‘I don’t think I can go to sleep,’ and I asked why not, and he’s like, ‘I’m so worried about Chuck.’”

The voyeuristic lens von Ziegesar applied to old-money Upper East Siders, exploring the tension between their nervous inner lives and perfect outward appearances, is what she sought to bring to “Cobble Hill,” which is named for the expensive Brooklyn neighborhood where she and the characters live. Except this book is more relatable, more normal: Instead of elbowing their way into Ivy League schools or throwing parties on Park Avenue, these characters are trying to find babysitters so they can go out for a drunken night of karaoke.

“It was ballsy and real,” the literary agent and author Bill Clegg said in an email. He worked with von Ziegesar with edits and feedback on her manuscript but said he didn’t need to do much.

“I think I just asked for it to be longer,” he added. (Mandy, it turns out, is also his favorite character.)

Von Ziegesar has published several books since the last “Gossip Girl” installment, including “Cum Laude,” about students at a small college in Maine, and “It Girl,” a “Gossip Girl” spinoff whose cover model was a young Hope Hicks, now one of President Trump’s advisers. Though they used the same formula of delving into the trials and tribulations of adolescence, they didn’t have the impact of “Gossip Girl.”

“Cobble Hill” is a greater departure for von Ziegesar. And, she mentioned, there are already early whispers of potentially turning it into a TV series as well.

In the years she worked on the book, von Ziegesar — who admitted her writing process has never been neat or methodical — continued to jot down flashes of inspiration, ideas and real life events on Post-it notes that she’d stick around her house.

“Unlike ‘Gossip Girl,’ where I was writing a series and there were two a year, this really is like a culmination of so many things,” she said. “I was working on it very sporadically for a long time.”

This year, as von Ziegesar was cleaning out one of her closets, she found a box of old Post-its. “I looked up and said to my husband, ‘Oh my god, it all went in the book,’” she said.

Spotted: Gossip Girl fans preparing to have some serious thoughts and feelings about what they're about to read.

Good morning, Upper East Siders. Are you ready to celebrate Penn Badgley's 34th birthday by taking a stroll down 5th Ave memory lane? That's right, in honor of Lonely Boy's big day, we're revisiting the CW hit series' by ranking all of its pairings—the good, the bad and the oh-so-very pretty.

Over the course of its six-season run, Gossip Girl worked its way through almost every pairing imaginable. Nate (Chace Crawford) dated just about every female that appeared on the show, while Serena (Blake Lively) also had her fair share of love interests. And c'mon, who can forget about Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Blair (Leighton Meester), with the pair going on to become one of TV's most beloved couples.

But was that able to snag them the top spot in our ranking? Or was another pairing able to defeat "Chair" and claim victory?
