Warner Bros. Gossip - Batgirl Talent To Be Paid Off With Bonuses - Bleeding Cool News

Ever since movie reviewer of the New York Post got his scoop (that everyone from the Hollywood Re-reporter down tried to claim as their own) about Batgirl being cancelled for both theatrical and streaming on HBO Max, I have been working my sources to try and squeeze out a little more information about what's going on generally.

People at DC Comics don't know a thing; they are clicking refresh like the rest of us. They are, however, resigned to having to can or deprioritise a bunch of planned Batgirl comic book projects to coincide with the movie's release next year. And probably Blue Beetle as well; they are just waiting to be told, so what's going on?

Batgirl
Batgirl Concept Art from DC FanDome. © 2021 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved.

First, Warner Bros. is keen, it seems, to move DC Comics adaptations to cinemas only. So no more streaming first, or even streaming close to release; they will try and turn the dial back on that. No high-profile TV shows either; if they can be saved for the big screen, that's where their priority is. The belief is that the Disney+ Marvel shows could have been packaged to be released in cinemas first, and they have been leaving money on the table. And Warner Bros. likes money. Shame, I thought Discovery would love a Suicide Squad: King Shark spinoff. At least Peacekeeper is safe, for now.

And that $90-$100 million spend can be taken as a big tax write-off, which will be well timed for the new Discovery Warner Bros, merger/buyout/selloff. But there was more of a worry about doubling that budget or more to get the movie released properly and not meet expectations.

But Warner Bros. will be spending money on big bonuses for the talent involved with Batgirl to make up for no release, to keep them spouting off on social media or in interviews. Shame they didn't do that for Scoob! though. Or maybe writers don't count.

There's also gossip about this being seen as another sign of the Curse Of Brendan Fraser, who was to play the Big Bad, the Ted Carson version of Firefly in Batgirl. This kind of gossip originated over a significant gap in his movie career after the Mummy movies. Well, it is being fired up again.

And yes. everyone is looking at The Flash movie starring the euphemistically "troubled" Ezra Miller as the next victim. But unlike Batgirl, internal screenings have been very well received indeed. People working on the movie are legitimately excited, and those involved think they have a great film here. They have a lot of bigger name talent on screen than Batgirl did, and both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as Batman rather than just one.

It has also been pointed out that The Incredible Hulk and Kick-Ass also managed to be released without their big star doing any promotion. Something that people at DC Comics have also been saying, especially since they have a Flash comic prequel coming out in a month with Ezra Miller's likeness on the cover and throughout the comic book. Let's see when final orders from comic shops for that comic book are due if anything changes.

And maybe, just maybe, one day you will get to see the comic book adaptation of what the Batgirl movie would have been, And for someone who gets the rights to sell them to an Eastern European market who will torrent them back; to the USA…

The Psychology of Why We Love and Need to Gossip - The Daily Beast

At the start of every episode of the popular podcast Normal Gossip, host Kelsey McKinney asks her guest: What is your relationship to gossip?

The responses run the gamut. Some express feelings of guilt and shame. Others hate feeling excluded from juicy secrets. Some people discuss the power or leverage that gossip can give them over others. And for many, there’s just a simple yet irresistible joy in the activity of sharing what you know.

Gossip, as the show reflects, isn’t just for middle-aged ladies or neighborhood busybodies. And according to a growing body of research, gossip isn’t just a guilty pleasure—it serves important functions within our communities and for our psychology.

You may think you know gossip when you hear it, but coming up with a cohesive definition is harder than it seems. One 2021 study led by Dutch researchers found 324 definitions of gossip in academic papers, indicating a “lack of consensus” about that definition according to Bianca Beersma, a professor of organizational behavior at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and one of the study’s coauthors. Beersma and her colleagues identified the elements that most definitions of gossip have in common, and based on that, proposed a sharper definition: “A sender communicating to a receiver about a target who is absent or unaware of the content.” This can, but doesn’t always, overlap with things like rumor, which tends to be more based on falsehoods.

That definition leaves a few things out that you might associate with gossip. For one, it doesn’t have to be negative—one 2019 study found that most gossip is actually neutral. The new definition also doesn’t specify who must be doing the gossip (the 2019 study and others have found that men and women gossip the same amount), in what setting, for what purpose, or whether they’re talking about personal or professional matters.

Omitting those specifics makes sense when you consider the different roles that sociologists and psychologists suspect that gossip plays in our lives. One that has been well-studied is that gossip helps to solidify social bonds, both between the two people who are gossiping and within communities as a way of establishing their rules, values, and cultures.

“Some people call gossip the chewing gum of the mind.”

— Mark Pezzo, University of South Florida

Consider, for example, the gossip that Person X hooked up with Person Y. Presumably this information would be surprising (all the best gossip should be at least a little shocking). But why, exactly, is it surprising? Is it a good surprise or a bad surprise? Is the couple crossing a line or violating some sort of established social norm between friends, coworkers, or other community? The way you and your friend talk about this hookup speaks volumes about the values that you and your friend share—as individuals as well as part of the community you both reside in.

“Gossip is a way of understanding the cartography of the community you’re in—it’s a means of understanding the structure of that community, and we’re all part of multiple communities,” Gary A. Fine, a sociologist at Northwestern University, told The Daily Beast. “Some people call gossip the chewing gum of the mind.”

Psychologically, too, gossip plays an important role. “The major function of gossip is to understand people,” Mark Pezzo, a psychologist at the University of South Florida, told The Daily Beast.

Pezzo’s observation can refer to understanding other people—third parties who are part of the story being told. But sometimes gossip is also a way for the speakers to understand themselves, and work through difficult situations to contemplate how they themselves might handle them, or at least learn from another person’s mistakes. “Knowing our world better feels good, makes us feel more empowered,” said Fine. “Why do we read romance novels or science fiction? it gives us an opportunity to play with ideas…it’s fun.” Some older studies have also pointed to the fact that gossiping often involves self-disclosure, which can also feel enjoyable.

Another of gossip’s key functions, and one we’ve seen play out in the public stage in recent years, is to act as a whisper network to help people protect each other against those in power who are prone to abuse. “Gossip can be used to warn group members about norm violators,” Beersma told The Daily Beast. “When these norm violators have high power, gossip is arguably a much ‘safer’ way to warn others than to do this openly, which would make one run the risk of retaliation by the high-power group member the gossip is about.”

Though these kinds of whisper networks have always existed, the #MeToo movement was a high-profile example of what happens when gossip breaks out of the communities from which it originated, and penetrates the public sphere, said Maria Verena Peters, a graduate coordinator at TU Dortmund University in Germany. Consider Harvey Weinstein—before the producer was sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault, for years actresses quietly warned each other not to allow themselves to be alone with him, until his abuse became an open secret in Hollywood. It took brave women coming forward with their stories, and reporters to verify them, to turn gossip into information that was legitimate enough to “cancel” him, and to take legal action; Weinstein was, of course, one of many people whose history of abuse was brought to light during #MeToo.

Verena Peters’ 2020 paper published in the European Journal of American Studies about gossip and the #MeToo movement concluded that, what’s different about this moment was that it was the first time that women seem to have been believed en masse (scholars are still working to unravel why). “Nothing about the factual circumstances had changed, but the cultural circumstances had changed,” Verena Peters told The Daily Beast.

“What makes gossip a rather complicated phenomenon is that it can serve multiple ‘goals’ for the individuals engaging in it.”

— Bianca Beersma, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

Which function of gossip is more important in a given conversation varies by situation. “What makes gossip a rather complicated phenomenon is that it can serve multiple ‘goals’ for the individuals engaging in it,” Beersma said, adding that other elements, including the information-sharer’s intention, can affect how the information is received.

Researchers still have questions about gossip. There’s little data, for example, on how gossip is perceived and functions in different cultures—particularly non-Western ones. Beersma and others are also working to further understand what motivates people to gossip.

It’s possible that we will have insights into these questions sooner rather than later; Beersma’s 2021 study noted that the words “gossip” or “third-party information” appear in scientific studies at almost double the rate than they did a decade prior. (Fine noted, however, that the number of scientific studies has increased overall, too—so that rate may not be as representative as it seems at first glance.)

As we understand more about how we use gossip, perhaps little by little we can chip away at the stigma surrounding it. “I would like people to be aware that gossip was not always a word that was associated with women—it came to be in the 19th century for the purposes of creating power imbalances,” Verena Peters said. If we all gossip, and we understand the value and power it can have for all people, then maybe we can commit ourselves to doing it better, with fewer of its destructive qualities.

“Gossip is not inherently sinful or wrong or inappropriate. It is part of the way we come to terms with our world,” Fine said. “But gossip can be harsh or negative. I think we need a generosity towards each other when we’re gossiping, to try not to draw those [social] boundaries too tightly.”

Georgia on My Mind, And More Music News and Gossip - Flagpole - Flagpole Magazine

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Rabbit Hole Studios is now five years old, and a hearty congratulation goes out to all concerned. The artist performance and community space will host a free night of karaoke and skating—roller, inline, hoverboards and scooters are specifically mentioned as items that can be accommodated—on Saturday, Aug. 13. Equipment may also be rented from Rabbit Hole for $10. This event runs from 7 p.m.–12 a.m. Food and beverages are to be provided, and the space will also hold a free raffle for 30 hours of rehearsal and recording space time as a way of saying thanks to musicians who have supported it over the years. Speaking of support, if you enjoy the things Rabbit Hole does and appreciate its commitment to service, you might consider throwing some weight behind your words with a membership to the space. There are multiple price points for patronage, each with a particular set of benefits, and they range from a mere five bucks a month to “OK, rich folks, pony up!” levels. Find out more about Rabbit Hole Studios via facebook.com/whiterabbitproductionsllc and rabbitholestudios.org. That second URL features everything you need to know about Rabbit Hole, and also info on becoming a member.

CALENDAR TIME: Normally I try to avoid mentioning upcoming shows until they’re right on top of us, because it generally does no good to mention something only to have folks forget it in a few days. That said, tickets are moving so quickly for Kenosha Kid’s much anticipated release show for its triple LP October Book that a second show is now booked. The first show is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 2 at The Lewis Room at Tweed Recording with openers Night Palace and Cicada Rhythm. Chances are good this one will be totally sold out by the time you read this. The newly added show happens the next night at the same place, but with opener Adron instead of Night Palace. Advance tickets are $20 and may be acquired via kenoshakid.com/adron-kid-rhythm.

MR. AND MS. PAC MAN AND THEIR INVITED GUESTS: Echo Bass Records turned up the heat again this week with a new release from Killa Cabbi. It’s titled Pixelated Reminder and runs eight tracks long. This release is unique for both Cabbi and Echo Bass in that it’s entirely instrumental and composed of chip tunes/eight-bit compositions. Basically, old video game technology that we’ve previously seen only a few other local artists explore, and none in recent history. The undeniably buoyancy of this style carries the tunes along just fine, if albeit somewhat faceless. The record takes a temporary darker turn on “Aboleth Battle” and “Stelth Bomber” (sic) but picks back up at its end. Check this out over at echobassrecords.bandcamp.com.

OLD, SWEET SONGS: The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and The Richard B. Russell Jr. Special Collections Libraries Building (Whew! What a mouthful…) will host an opening for the exhibit “Georgia on My Mind: Finding Belonging In Music History” Thursday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. The exhibit “explores some of the genres, spaces, and performers that have helped to define music in the state over time.” To this end, featured artists include R.E.M., Ray Charles, Outkast, Bill Anderson and many others. Attendees are invited to dress in band merchandise if desired. Live music will happen courtesy of jazz pianist James Weidman, guitarists Skip Taylor and John Culwell and the perpetually compelling and talented hip-hop artist Cassie Chantel. Please note that this event is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required, and I’ve zero idea what the capacity of this building is, even though it’s quite large, so you may want to jump on this. Please send RSVP requests to Leandra Nessel via LNessel@uga.edu or by calling 706-542-3879.

QUIET OBSERVER: So there’s this guy named Simon Hunt whom I know absolutely zero about except he did one short album 11 years ago and only just this month released some new material that just came across my desk. He does, however, mention that these newly released tracks “were developed sporadically over the last 10 years.” At any rate, the new set is titled The Hiatus, which seems appropriate. Hunt’s music is evocative of a whole slew of nearly-New Age composers, but with a decidedly pop edge. The whole record is thoroughly enjoyable, cleverly constructed and sequenced, and—for my money—absolutely shines on tracks like “browsing,” the main riff of which is repeated on “Albie on a good day.” Find this and enjoy at simonhunt.bandcamp.com.

The daily gossip: August 2, 2022 - The Week

Lena Dunham's career almost ended before it began — or at least that's how she felt after blowing a Penny Marshall audition when she was 12. On The Jess Cagle Show, the Girls creator recalled her failed audition for a role in Marshall's 2001 movie Riding in Cars With Boys. "I understand why I didn't get the role," Dunham said, explaining that part of the audition was for all the young actors to smile, and she immediately declared her refusal to do so. "I said, 'I'm Lena, I'm from New York, and I don't smile on command.'" Dunham said. "And Penny Marshall said, 'It's called acting, honey.'" Though Dunham now gets why Marshall was right, at the time, she says she spent a week declaring, "My career is over!" Thankfully, she was very wrong about that and would go on to enjoy a long career of offending new groups of people every week.

Royal Gossip Say Queen Elizabeth Supposedly Forced Prince William And Kate Middleton To Go On A Budget - Suggest

Is Queen Elizabeth urging Prince William and Kate Middleton to cut back on their spending? According to one report, the monarch is putting the Cambridges on a budget. Here’s what we know about the couple’s allegedly penny-pinching.

Queen ‘Tightening The Palace Purse Strings’?

This week, Life & Style reports Queen Elizabeth wants Kate Middleton and Prince William to cut back on their excessive spending habits. The annual Sovereign Grant report recently revealed that the couple’s expenditure reached an all-time high last year. According to the report, the Firm’s expenses increased by 17 percent, and it was mostly due to the Cambridges’ costly travel expenses. And after seeing the price tag on the couple’s recent tour Caribbean tour, the queen apparently ordered an intervention.

RELATED: Prince William, Kate Middleton Seeking To Branch Their Charitable Work Out To A Surprising Location

“The queen summoned William and Kate to Windsor Castle for an urgent meeting,” an insider reveals. “She demanded they curb their spending and even asked one of the secretaries to put together a budget spreadsheet, which the queen’s instructed they stick to.” And as the couple prepares to move into Windsor Castle, Her Majesty is apparently capping their moving expenses. “The queen has banned them from hiring an expensive interior designer,” the tipster muses. “She wants to teach them a lesson—that money doesn’t grow on trees!”

Queen Elizabeth Puts Cambridges ‘On A Budget’?

It’s always amusing when tabloids grossly underestimate the complexity of royal lives. It’s almost funny to picture the queen sitting the Cambridges down, handing them a piece of paper entitled “Family Budget,” and teaching them how to balance a checkbook. Of course, this didn’t happen, and the magazine is kidding itself if it truly buys this dubious insider’s testimony.

We aren’t disputing that William and Middleton’s spending last year probably raised some red flags. The couple’s Caribbean tour was almost universally seen as a disaster that cost British taxpayers millions. The couple may have even been reprimanded and instructed not to repeat their mistakes—that isn’t a radical claim to make.

But the Cambridges are essentially employees of the Crown. Surely, they have people that handle their finances and travel plans rather than somehow relying on the queen herself. And we’re certain that any budget adjustments would need to be run through multiple people, not just the Cambridges themselves.

Finally, even if this did require a personal sit-down between Middleton, William, and the royal matriarch, we’re certain the details of such a meeting would be kept private. There wouldn’t be any talk of it in the tabloids, and Life & Style surely wouldn’t be the one to break the news.

More Cambridge Rumors From The Rag

It’s Life & Style‘s past reporting on the royal couple that really sealed the deal here. The magazine has never been capable of providing accurate insight into the duke and duchess’s lives. Last year, the outlet claimed Middleton was battling Camila Parker Bowles for the crown as the queen’s health faltered. Then the tabloid alleged Middleton was secretly pregnant with twins. And more recently, the publication reported Middleton and William were fighting over how to raise Prince George. So, no, we aren’t buying anything Life & Style is selling when it comes to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Transfer Gossip: Man Utd heat rises on Ronaldo from inside club as Jorge Mendes plots exit path; Everton get Chelsea raid boost - Yahoo Eurosport UK

A Man Utd insider speaks of the reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo’s early exit from Old Trafford on Sunday, while Everton get a boost in a Chelsea raid – both in all the latest Transfer Gossip.

MAN UTD HEAT RISES ON RONALDO

Manchester United will not sanction Cristiano Ronaldo for leaving Sunday’s pre-season draw early – but a club insider has reportedly spoken of the disappointment over his actions.

The 37-year-old made his return to the squad for the 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford. Ronaldo played 45 minutes before new manager Erik ten Hag brought him off.

Ronaldo did not stay with the rest of the team and instead left Old Trafford before the final whistle.

He was not the only one to leave early, with his Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot also deciding to depart before the match finished.

According to The Sun, United will not sanction either player. However, a club insider supposedly told the newspaper of the disappointment over Ronaldo’s actions.

“It is not a good look to leave early when you have been involved in the squad,” a source reportedly said.

“It is different if you are up in the stands and not involved. You would expect someone who has played in the game to be in the changing rooms at the end to listen to the manager’s thoughts.

“Also a lot of people were there to see him and he was not even involved in the clapping of the fans after the final whistle.”

The development comes amid Ronaldo’s desire to leave Man Utd and seek a return to the Champions League.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, is trying to find his star client a new club. And The Sun reiterates that Mendes has told United that all they need to do is name their price as he has an offer on the table.

But United have continued to insist that Ronaldo is not for sale. They expect the former Real Madrid man to complete the second year of his two-year deal.

BATSHUAYI OPEN TO EVERTON MOVE

Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi is willing to listen to Everton interest as the Toffees look to raid Stamford Bridge, a report has claimed.

The Belgian moved to west London in 2016 from Marseille but has failed to make his mark under any of the managers at Chelsea since then.

Instead, he has gone out on five loan spells including two stints at Crystal Palace. With only one year left on his Chelsea contract, though, the Blues are now looking to shift him for good.

Previous reports talked of Everton interest in Batshuayi as they look to replace Richarlison, who has gone to Tottenham.

And according to talkSPORT, Batshuayi is open to a move to Goodison Park as he looks to revive his career.

At 28, the striker wants to find a permanent new home to enjoy the prime years of his career. He fancies the idea of being a main man at Everton as they look to climb back up the Premier League table.

Batshuayi is also looking to get back in peak form ahead of the World Cup. He has a solid record on the international stage having scored 25 goals from 45 caps.

Batshuayi has only played 77 times for Chelsea, scoring 25 goals.

TRANSFER GOSSIP – SCHMEICHEL CLOSE TO LEICESTER EXIT

Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is reportedly closing in on a move to Nice.

The Denmark international has spent 11 years with the Foxes and proved instrumental in their 2016 Premier League title triumph.

However, at 35 he wants a new challenge as he enters the final stages of his career.

The Daily Mail therefore reports that Schmeichel is to undergo a medical with French club Nice this week.

Brendan Rodgers left the stopper out of Leicester’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Sevilla on Sunday.

The manager said after the Foxes’ 1-0 win: “There’s been a little bit of interest over the summer.

“Kasper has earned the right to have a think about the next chapter of his career and where that’s going to be. When there’s something concrete, we’ll sit and discuss it, and take it from there.”

Schmeichel has played 478 games for Leicester since his move from Leeds United in 2011.

Transfer gossip: Will Chelsea pay £152m for Manchester United target De Jong and Fofana? - Yahoo Eurosport UK

Chelsea target Frenkie De Jong in action for Barcelona Credit: PA Images
Chelsea target Frenkie De Jong in action for Barcelona Credit: PA Images

Chelsea are ‘waking up’ and making an offer for Frenkie De Jong, while Leicester are quoting big money for Wesley Fofana…

CHELSEA TO ‘WAKE UP’ ON DE JONG
Chelsea have apparently told Barcelona that they are on the verge of making an offer for Frenkie De Jong. We’re not sure why they are not just making an offer but who are we to question SPORT?

They say ‘the Londoners will go after De Jong knowing that Barça wants a minimum of 80 million euros, which they already have guaranteed if they sell the footballer to Manchester United’, but there are question marks over whether they will also compensate De Jong for the money he is owed by the Spanish club.

Chelsea are definitely more attractive to De Jong from a sporting point of view, but are they desperate enough to pay him the money he is owed by Barcelona? Manchester United are.

The claim on Sunday was that United would ‘make final ‘irrefutable’ offer for De Jong as Ronaldo ‘problem’ emerges’.

FOFANA PRICE REVEALED
Brendan Rodgers has categorically said that Wesley Fofana is not for sale but a) Chelsea are not taking no for an answer and b) nobody is ever entirely not for sale, are they? Everybody has a price.

And according to the Daily Mail, the price for Fofana stands at £85m. After all, they know that the young Frenchman is better than Harry Maguire and that’s what they squeezed out of Manchester United for his services. So it makes perfect sense.

‘If a deal cannot be struck for Fofana, Thomas Tuchel is also said to be interested in signing Inter Milan defenders Denzel Dumfries and Milan Skriniar,’ say the Mail, while Fabrizio Romano say that Chelsea are still pushing on both Fofana and Josko Gvardiol, though there is talk that he could cost a cool £80m. Yikes.

Leicester are letting nobody go on the cheap. They have also reportedly ‘slapped a £60m price tag’ on their midfielder James Maddison amid interest from Newcastle United.

MAN CITY TURN TO GUERREIRO
Having failed in their attempts to persuade Brighton to sell them Marc Cucurella for less than £50m, Manchester City are turning to a different left-back and that different left-back is Borussia Dortmund’s Portuguese left-back Raphael Guerreiro, who started the season with an assist from left-back in a German Cup victory on Friday night.

There was talk last month that Guerreiro would be available for less than £17m but that was when Dortmund were actively pursuing David Raum, but he has since joined RB Leipzig.
