The best lesson from Ancient Greece to help stop kids (and adults!) from gossiping - Aleteia

Socrates' advice maybe over 2,000 years old, but it works just as well today.

Gossip has been around since time immemorial. The only difference today is that there are even more ways to spread the tittle-tattle. And as we know, spreading gossip is not only hurtful and unnecessary, it can do a lot of damage.

This is especially true for young teens, who can fall victims to gossip and bullying, leading to depression and even death by suicide.

So to help nip things in the bud, we can try and encourage our children not to gossip at all. Of course this can come from being good role models and not gossiping ourselves, but it can also come with some practical advice from Socrates, the philosopher who was born nearly 500 years before Christ.

In a conversation that has been widely shared on social media, Socrates established a three-filter system that determines if what news you’re spreading is worthwhile, or not.

Socrates discussion with the individual is said to have gone like this:

-“Before telling anything about the others, it’s good to take the time to filter what you mean. I call it the test of the three sieves. The first sieve is the TRUTH. Have you checked if what you’re going to tell me is true?

No, I just heard it.

Very good! So, you don’t know if it’s true. We continue with the second sieve, that of KINDNESS. What you want to tell me about my friend, is it good?

Oh, no! On the contrary.

So, questioned Socrates, you want to tell me bad things about him and you’re not even sure they’re true? Maybe you can still pass the test of the third sieve, that of UTILITY. Is it useful that I know what you’re going to tell me about this friend?

No, really.

So, concluded Socrates, what you were going to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful. Why, then, did you want to tell me this?

While we can’t know if this was the exact conversation, it’s a simple, but very useful guide for kids — and parents — to gauge their words. And as Pope Francis shared:

Gossip is a bad thing. In the beginning it may seem enjoyable and fun, but in the end, it fills our hearts with bitterness and poisons us, too!”

Gossip Girl's creators reflect on the legacy of season three's Thanksgiving episode - The A.V. Club

While The CW’s Gossip Girl aired many Thanksgiving episodes over its six-season run, none are more iconic than season three’s “The Treasure Of Serena Madre” dinner scene, which circulates every holiday season and has become a TikTok trend over the years. In a new interview with Bustle, the writers of the episode reflect on the episode’s 13-year long legacy.

“I love that it comes up every year,” says Joshua Safran, who co-wrote the episode with Robert Hull. “It’s a warm hug every time the memes come back around.”

In the climax of the episode, nearly all of the characters come together for a peaceful Thanksgiving meal. However, all have come with their own dirty laundry to air out over turkey and fine cheeses. Over the course of several long minutes, everyone gets to deliver their own punchy and pointed one-liner before throwing in their napkin and leaving the dinner table in a huff.

“It was [a relief] that it seemed like other people also enjoyed it and got the tone of it,” Gossip Girl co-creator Stephanie Savage says. “When all of these TikToks showed up, that was really incredible and really kind of moving.”

It’s a melodramatic scene, which is only heightened by the use of Jason Derulo’s bop “Whatcha Say,” adding the cherry on top to the over-the-top moment.

“To be able to put that song—just a very bold musical statement—over this scene in a way that would bring with it all of these kinds of resonances and cultural allusions felt like that could be either really great or really terrible,” Savage says. “And again, we liked it. So we went for it.”

The use of the song not only ups the drama, but sparks a conversation between Gossip Girl and Savage’s previous show, The O.C. In the season two finale of The O.C., the series famously uses Imogen Heap’s “Hide And Seek,” which Derulo samples in “Whatcha Say.”

“It fed into a nice dialogue between the two shows,” Schwartz says. “‘Whatcha Say’ has been very good to us—in all its forms.”

Safran, who currently serves as the showrunner on the HBO reboot of the series, says Thanksgiving episodes are a built-in part of the series structure, and will no be going away anytime soon.

“As long as Gossip Girl runs, there will be Gossip Girl Thanksgivings,” Safran says. “Where other shows have Christmas, we have Thanksgiving. We will hold onto that.”

New Releases from Hooker Vision, And More Music News and Gossip - Flagpole - Flagpole Magazine

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all. Without getting too far into it, and before this slides into sentimentality and sappiness, let me just say that I remain thankful for everyone who reads these words each week and every artist whose news populates it. I mean, sure, there’s always going to be room for specific criticisms, but with regard to the huge, overall universe of Athens music, I remain very thankful. I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday. Now let’s get into it…

TWO NIGHT FLIGHT: This Friday, Nov. 25 and Saturday, Nov. 26, Flicker Theatre & Bar will host the 2022 instance of the Cloud Recordings Festival. Tickets are an exceedingly reasonable $10 per night. This year’s lineup features Telemarket, the duo Shane Parish & John Kiran Fernandes, The Rishis and Kiran Fernandes on Friday, then Marcel Sletten, In A Kythe, Shane Parish (solo) and Organically Programmed on Saturday. For more information, please see facebook.com/cloudrecordings and cloudrecordings.com.

DRIVIN’ BY, INDEED: Tickets are on sale now for the individual solo tours by Drive By Truckers’ Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley. Thing is, though, none of the shows are in Athens, but a few are fairly close. Hood plays Atlanta’s City Winery Dec. 13–14. The closest Cooley will come to Athens is Alabama, but he’s got four shows in our neighbor state. He’ll play Birmingham (Dec. 15), then he’ll do a double-header in Waverly (early show and late show on Dec. 17) before playing Selma on Dec. 23. Find tickets and more information at drivebytruckers.com.

HI-DEE HI-DEE HI-DEE HI: The Artie Ball Swing Band will perform a special show at VFW Post 2872 (835 Sunset Drive) this Friday, Nov. 25. The group, composed of quite talented Athens folks, sometimes performs in different configurations. For this show, though, they assure us that, “The full band will be on hand to play for you and help you get a little fun out of life!” which seems nice and helpful of them. Doors open at 7 p.m. and music starts at 8 p.m. For more information, please see facebook.com/vfwpost2872.

BYRON COLEY ON SPEED-DIAL: The cascade of new releases from Athens experimental label Hooker Vision will not let up and, as such, I’ve fallen behind on my coverage of what I believe to be one of the most aesthetically—in every sense—pleasing endeavors to ever come out of Athens. A few weeks ago, the label released new work from Quiet Evenings, Motion Sickness of Time Travel and M.M. Turner. The Quiet Evenings’ release, a 30-minute, two-track ambient drone named Glass Bridge is both unwittingly aggressive in its first movement while incongruously comforting in its second. Motion Sickness of Time Travel’s Outerboros is a combination of recent music and tracks from a decade ago. Self-described as possibly being “subliminal pop,” I’d have to agree, as this is especially true with tracks like “Green Carpet.” This is Rachel Evans’ (one half of the Hooker Vision C-suite) longtime solo project which has continually come more into focus. Finally, there’s Tree in Sun and Rain from composer and Professor of Music M.M. Turner (aka Mitch Turner). There are four themes explored here: light, rain, grass and leaves. Turner’s compositions contain solid underpinnings but have a sheen of brittleness across them such that it’s almost as if we weren’t supposed to hear them. This record is guitar-oriented and each track was recorded in a single take. But, as the liner notes say, “…this is not mere jamming, these pieces have been masterfully crafted and composed.” Well, I’m certainly no master, but even through my limited understanding I’m inclined to agree. For more information, please see hookervision.bandcamp.com and mmturnermusic.com.

BEYOND AND BEFORE: Prog rockers Nix The Scientist lean in hard to that descriptor on the group’s latest release, Chosen I. This five-song release certainly pays honest tribute to the band’s chosen musical predecessors. To wit, if you can get through the opening song “Prophecy” without thinking of both Emerson, Lake & Palmer as well as Pink Floyd, then you get a gold star. The band takes a huge left turn by the time it gets to “The Curse Of Being Bored” which is a fairly by-the-numbers fourth-wave emo pop song. Similarly, the theatrical screamo of “Eyes Up” leaves me pretty nonplussed. The operatic return to form, if you will, of closer “The End” is a fitting bookend which wraps this up nicely but, when matched with the record’s opener, you’ve got a book whose cover isn’t representative at all of what’s actually inside. I dunno. Let’s just say Nix The Scientist shines brightest when they’re reaching for the stars instead of looking on the ground. Find this on Spotify and other services, and for more information, please see facebook.com/nixthescientist.

The daily gossip: November 22, 2022 - The Week

As a lover, Liam Neeson has a very particular set of skills. Speaking with AARP: The Magazine, Helen Mirren opened up about her past relationship with the Taken actor, whom she dated in the 1980s. "We loved each other," she said, noting she has personally made a shirt for all of her boyfriends including Neeson. "We were not meant to be together in that way, but we loved each other very, very much." Neeson and Mirren met on the movie Excalibur, and when they reunited on the Graham Norton Show in 2018, she noted they "were a serious item" and lived together for four years. Neeson also recalled being immediately "smitten" the moment he saw her. Mirren later married Taylor Hackford in 1997, and they're still together. But she tells AARP, "I love [Neeson] deeply to this day. He's such an amazing guy." One might even say she's taken with him.

Transfer gossip: Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr to link up in Man Utd’s attack? - Yahoo Eurosport UK

Manchester United are said to be the side best placed to give Kylian Mbappe the move he craves in January. And Erik ten Hag also fancies Vinicius Jr…

MAN UTD BEST PLACED FOR MBAPPE
Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr to pair up at Manchester United next season?

It’s possible if there’s a shred of truth in any of the lines coming out of Spain. Indeed, Mbappe could be at Old Trafford even sooner…

Sport reckons Mbappe has been on to his paymasters at PSG, urging them to sell him in January if a suitable offer is plonked in front of them. Of course, many clubs would take the France star but United are viewed as the side most capable of meeting the financial demands involved in such a deal.

The only issue there, as Sport sees it, is that Mbappe isn’t attracted to the ‘sports project’. Which feels like a bloody big problem. Liverpool, though, is ‘more to Mbappe’s taste’.

VINICIUS OFFERED RONALDO’S JERSEY
Perhaps United might have more joy in convincing Vinicius to move to Manchester…

According to El Nacional, the Brazilian has been identified by Erik ten Hag as the forward he wants to replace Cristiano Ronaldo. As things stand, Vinicius will enter the final year of his contract next summer, which is most likely the reason this link has suddenly come about, but this report suggests Ten Hag has been in contact with the Real star.

Indeed, Vinicius is likely to have been offered Ronaldo’s No.7 shirt, which probably isn’t as attractive as United think after Ronaldo wiped his arse with it, following a long line of players to besmirch the jersey.

SPURS STILL KEEN ON GORDON DEAL
The season hasn’t quite gone to plan for Anthony Gordon following a summer in which he was chased hard by Chelsea. Everton stood firm and rejected a series of offers for the winger, but Frank Lampard has benched the England Under-21 international after he struggled to recapture his form of last term.

But that isn’t deterring Tottenham. The word according to football.london is that Spurs are still keeping tabs on Gordon ahead of the January window.

Gordon’s lack of form doesn’t seem to have affected his value, nor Everton’s desire to keep the academy graduate. Indeed, it is thought they will resist again any offers that arrive mid-season, with next summer viewed as the most appropriate time to strike a deal. But Tottenham haven’t given up hope yet of bringing the 21-year-old to north London for the second half of the season.
