LYNDA HIRSCH ON TELEVISION -- GOSSIP, by Lynda Hirsch - Creators Syndicate

Before "General Hospital" super couple Luke and Laura, there were Bill and Susan Hayes, who made the cover of Time Magazine. At the time, a very big deal and not too shabby now. At 94, Bill Hayes (Doug, "Days of Our Lives") is still going strong. Last week, the show celebrated his 50 years playing the sometime ne'er-do-well con man and always loving husband and father.

In 1995, Hayes had the No. 1 song on Billboard's Top 100. It was "The Ballad of Davey Crockett." The song dealt with the coonskin cap Davey wore. Hayes was also a regular on the Sid Caesar show, "Your Show of Shows." Caeser joked and Bill sang. If you have YouTube, you must watch the "This Is Your Life" episode of the show. There's not too much of Hayes, but it's a hoot.

In 1970, Hayes debuted on "Days of Our Lives." He was a con man who came to Salem to bilk rich Susan out of her money. The minute he saw Julie, he was in love. He remained a con man, but also remained in love. Hayes fell in love with Susan Seaforth, who played the spitfire Julie. They married in 1974 and still sparkle when they share a scene. In life, they are much the same. Seaforth calls it as she sees it. Hayes plays diplomat.

When he started with the show, actors were not given wardrobe. They were given a dry-cleaning allowance. That changed. The studios now spend lots of money to make the actors look good.

Hayes has five children from his first marriage. He holds several college degrees and is a very giving man.

At one time, soaps would cross-promote by having local talent appear on their shows.

I did several episodes. Last week, I received a residual for $1.00 for my short turn on "Days."

Forget the check though. What I remember is the way Bill treated me when he saw me on set. I was standing off to the side when Bill put his arms around me. My character a French nurse, whom I named Nurse Busty. I am short and well-endowed.

When I began my lines, Bill stopped the scene. "You are a nurse in a French Hospital. She would not speak English. She would speak French," Bill said.

He gave me a line in French and made certain the pronunciation was correct.

He has been nominated for best actor in a drama by the Daytime Emmy Awards twice. Never won. This year, his work as Doug is Emmy-worthy. He played Doug heartsick, joyously happy and angry. This year the Emmys is not revealing prenominations. So, no word who is on the list, but he has to be. Not only is he a class act, he is the classiest human being.
