Gossip Girl reboot postponed to 2021 amid coronavirus delays - digitalspy.com

The Gossip Girl reboot continuation has been postponed to 2021, amid the delays brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

The popular teen drama series – which originally starred Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Penn Badgley, Chase Crawford and Taylor Momsen among others – was set to get a modern-day revamp with an entirely new cast.

But, like literally every other TV show and movie production in existence, filming on the reboot has been held back, as a result of filming shutdowns following the global spread of COVID-19.

"They hadn’t even started production yet; they were in pre-production and ready to roll," HBO Max chief content officer Kevin Reilly recently told Vulture.

"Things that would have been really meaningful and high profile have gotten pushed back," he added, in reference to other shows on the new streaming service that have seen production delayed, including an unscripted Friends reunion special.

The 10-episode Gossip Girl reboot series will follow a brand new bunch of wealthy young adults living in Manhattan, while addressing "just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years".

While none of the original cast members will be reprising their roles on the show – although we wouldn't rule out a cameo here and there – one star who will return is series narrator Kristen Bell.

Show creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage confirmed Bell's return in a joint statement with showrunner Joshua Safran, saying: "Kristen Bell has always been and will always be the voice of Gossip Girl."

The Gossip Girl spin-off will air on HBO Max in 2021 – the streaming service launches in the US on May 27. In the meantime, you can catch up on seasons 1-6 of the original series on Netflix now.
