  • Miley Cyrus talked about the privilege of being a celebrity while navigating the current coronavirus crisis in a new interview with The Wall Street Journal.
  • Cyrus admitted that she understands the bulk of the world isn't going through the pandemic with the same comforts of a well-off celebrity.

Miley Cyrus isn't staying mum when it comes to the social and financial disparities made evident by the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

In a new cover story with The Wall Street Journal, Cyrus explained that even though she understands the severity of the current global health crisis, she knows that her position of privilege as a celebrity isn't how the majority of the world is currently handling the pandemic.

"I'm sure some people I was reaching out to [for Bright Minded] felt the same way I do, which is that my experience is so rare, it almost doesn't feel right to talk about," said the singer. "This isn't COVID-19, what I'm experiencing. My life has been pushed pause on, but really I have no idea what this pandemic is like. I am comfortable in my space and able to put food on my table and [I am] financially stable, and that's just not the story for a lot of people."

Cyrus continued, saying that many people she's invited onto her social distancing-inspired Instagram Live talk show, Bright Minded, probably echo a similar sentiment.

"I'm sure a lot of the hesitation for other people saying yes to doing the show is because it almost doesn't feel right for celebrities to share our experience. Because it just doesn't compare," added Cyrus.

Bright Minded has served as a creative outlet for Cyrus while she's been adhering to Los Angeles's stay-at-home orders alongside her boyfriend, Cody Simpson. Cyrus told WSJ that she could even one day see herself taking her platform from Instagram to actual television screens.

"I also love entertainment and encouraging people to celebrate their uniqueness. A lot of what I've represented in my entire career is individuality and gender identity and sexual identity," said Cyrus regarding the potential of an official talk show. "I would love to create a platform where individuality is highlighted and a place for good news and light and activism and optimism and highlighting the folks doing really big work who don't always get the attention that is deserved."
