Keep reading to find out how Blake Lively became Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl.

College Girl?

Fans don't know everything about Blake Lively and as it turns out, she wasn't so sure about saying yes to playing Serena.

It's always interesting to learn how someone got cast in a role that made them famous. In Blake Lively's case, the actress said no when offered the role of Serena. According to Insider.com, Lively said, "No, I want to go to college. Thank you, though." Because the GG producers said that going to college was still a possibility if she took on the role, she said yes. They said that once season one was finished filming, "Your life will go back to normal and you can start going to school."

Why Lively Was Cast

The casting director, David Rapaport, said that he was on board with Blake Lively being cast as Serena from the very start. He explained to Elle.com that after a screen test, people thought that she was too "California" since she was blonde and that she didn't fit into the world of the Upper East Side. Rapaport said, "So we did another screen test with Blake and all we did was straighten her hair to make her look a little more sophisticated, so to speak."

Rapaport also said that he found Lively to be "the ultimate It Girl" because she seemed relatable. She was down to earth and he really liked that she had that quality. He was a fan of her movie Accepted and didn't think that anyone else could take on the role of Serena. He said, "I was terrified we wouldn't get her or they wouldn't like her because, honestly, the show lived and died on her, and I had absolutely no other ideas. And I read so many people."

Other Potential Serenas

Even though Lively was definitely supposed to play Serena, there are some other famous actresses who could have taken on the part.

Rumer Willis is one actress who was considered. According to Bustle.com, the network was a big fan of Willis as Serena, and they were wondering if Ashley Olsen could play Blair Waldorf.

It looks like Gossip Girl fans really can't picture anyone else as Serena. As one fan posted in a Reddit thread, "It would be so weird seeing someone else as Serena. I wasn't a huge fan of the character itself, but Blake does such a great job." Another fan said, "I think she was perfect for the role" because she had "Unattainable beauty and confidence."

How did Blake Lively feel about taking on the role of Serena, especially since she had her mind on studying and college life?

According to People.com, she has a good sense of humor about the whole thing and knows that the show ended up being very successful. There was no way that she would be able to go to college after the first season did so well and she has spoken about that. She said, "This is advice to anyone: when they say, ‘We promise, but we can’t put it in writing,’ there’s a reason they can’t put it in writing.”

Business Insider says that Lively calls herself "shy" and that she was nervous about playing Serena for that reason. Lively explained, “the idea of losing my anonymity was one that was scary to me. I remember saying when I read the script, ‘Whoever does this will not be able to walk out of their house ever again and be the same as before they started this. You could tell it was a cultural phenomenon.”

Gossip Girl fans probably never knew that Blake Lively had some reservations about playing Serena van der Woodsen since this is the role that made her so famous. Thankfully, the actress did say yes, and now Serena will live on in TV history as such a great, stylish character.
