Blake Lively Finally Responded to Gossip Girl's Identity in the Funniest Way - Glamour

Blake Lively just weighed in on Gossip Girl’s greatest controversy. (Major spoiler ahead.)

If you’re just finding out that Dan was Gossip Girl the whole time, you’re not alone. Because the series now lives forever on streaming, people are either watching it for the first time or revisiting it in all its soapy glory. They’re spotting funny fashion moments, sussing out continuity errors, and making memes—one which caught Lively’s attention.

“We watched the entire series to find out it’s Dan,” the meme reads. It’s a simple but timeless message; we hated this reveal back in 2012, when the series finale aired, and still do now. Thankfully, Lively (a.k.a. Serena van der Woodsen) is here to commiserate with us.

“YOU’RE surprised,” she added to the meme on her Instagram Stories in late October. “Imagine how the writers felt.” Burn.

I mean…she’s not wrong. Back in 2019, GG writer and executive producer Joshua Safran revealed the writers kind of had no idea who the show’s titular narrator really was. “One of the writers realized that Nate had never sent a tip into Gossip Girl, which is true at least through the end of season five,” Safran explained at Vulture Festival, per Refinery 29. “Nate never sent in a tip through all of those episodes, which is when we’re like, ‘Oh, well then he’s Gossip Girl.’”

But in a bizarre twist, GG was revealed to be Dan (Penn Badgley). No one was more confused by this than Badgley himself. “I was very surprised. We were all surprised,” he told HuffPost Live in 2013. “I didn’t know. I didn’t find out until just before we shot the last episode…. It technically doesn’t make sense for anyone to be Gossip Girl. I would have loved it if there had been a million flashes of every time he had looked at his cell phone and was like receiving some blast from Gossip Girl and being blown away from it.”

Badgley reiterated this point two years later. “It doesn’t make sense at all,” the actor told People. “It wouldn’t have made sense for anybody. Gossip Girl doesn’t make sense!”

It seems Blake Lively agrees. Hopefully the writers have a more solid plan going into the Gossip Girl reboot
