Bridgerton on Netflix: Everything We Know About Shondaland's 'Downton Abbey'-'Gossip Girl' Hybrid - Glamour

We finally have the premiere date for Bridgerton on Netflix, the much anticipated period drama, narrated by Dame Julie Andrews. (The show is one of eight series Shonda Rhimes will be making for Netflix.) Based on Julia Quinn's best-selling romance novels, Bridgerton premieres on the streamer this Christmas.

The series—which features stunning costumes, sweeping sets, and plenty of the elements you've come to love from a Shondaland series—follows Daphne Bridgerton, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family as she is introduced into Regency London society to be married. In other words, think of it as Downton Abbey meets Gossip Girl, and we are so here for it.

So what else do we know about Bridgerton on Netflix? Read on for all the details, and 10 just-released photos:

When will Bridgerton premiere?

The drama, created by longtime Shonda Rhimes collaborator Chris Van Dusen (Scandal, Grey's Anatomy), will premiere on Netflix on Christmas Day: December 25, 2020.

How many episodes will there be?

There are eight one-hour episodes.

What is the series about?

Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn's best-selling romance novels and is set in the high society world of London. The series follows Daphne Bridgerton, played by Phoebe Dynevor, the eldest daughter of the powerful Bridgerton family, as she makes her debut onto Regency London’s competitive marriage market.

Per Netflix, “Hoping to follow in her parents’ footsteps and find a match sparked by true love, Daphne’s prospects initially seem to be unrivaled. But as her older brother begins to rule out her potential suitors, the high-society scandal sheet written by the mysterious Lady Whistledown (voiced by Julie Andrews) casts aspersions on Daphne. Enter the highly desirable and rebellious Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), committed bachelor and the catch of the season for the debutantes’ mamas. Despite proclaiming that they want nothing the other has to offer, their attraction is undeniable and sparks fly as they find themselves engaged in an increasing battle of wits while navigating society’s expectations for their future.”
