As a gay person, I've heard several coming out stories: from friends, from acquaintances, even from strangers online. I came out in 2011, and I remember watching dozens of coming out stories on the internet before and after my experience. The stories I've heard have run the gamut, but they all have one thing in common: a sense of relief after the “coming out” part is over. I remember feeling so calm after telling my family I was gay—almost like I was exhaling for the first time.
Several queer celebrities went through something similar, as I discovered while diving into their coming out stories. I've said this before, but coming out really is the great equalizer of LGBTQIA+ people, regardless of age, race, gender, or body type: We're all scared to do it and, hopefully, free when it's over.
