If American teen drama could be summed up in one show, that would be Gossip Girl. The infamously sexy show followed the lives of Blair, Chuck, Nate, Serena, and other supremely wealthy Upper East Side high schoolers, whose lives were watched and broadcasted by a notorious secret blogger called Gossip Girl.
Fans loved the catty politics among the Upper East Siders, and can't wait to see it again on the Gossip Girl reboot which will air on HBO Max. In the OG series, there were some universal favorites, but some digging into Reddit threads (like this and this) shows that not all fans were predisposed to like and ship what the majority did.
10 Vanessa Doesn't Deserve Hatred
One look at Gossip Girl related social media shows that Vanessa might be one of the worst characters of the show, but an unpopular opinion is that the Brooklyn girl didn't deserve the hatred she got. She had good intentions until she got caught up with Juliet's plans in season 4, which led her to frame Jenny in the worst way possible and then skip town.
Vanessa also watched her sweet best friend turn into a super conniving, scheming person because he hung out with the Upper East Siders too much, and just wanted out from the toxicity.
9 Chuck And Blair Were Toxic
Everyone's endgame was Chair, but a number of fans think that Chuck and Blair were not a great couple. Chuck had tried to rape Jenny, and then in a later season immediately consensually slept with her after Blair rejected him. Both the Upper East Siders played games with each other instead of loving and supporting each other through the series.
Chuck and Blair did too many nasty things to each other (which included trading each other in for business deals and publically shaming each other) and the unpopular opinion is that they shouldn't have ended up together.
8 Jenny And Nate Should've Been Endgame
While Nate dated almost the entire Upper East Side at some point in his life, some Reddit patrons think that Jenny and Nate should have ended up together. The two had undeniable chemistry and seemed more sincere than Serena and Nate's relationship.
Fans also think that Nate and Jenny brought out the good sides of each other: they encouraged and stood up for each other which was not the case with most Gossip Girl couples.
7 The Upper East Siders Were Greedy And Entitled
Upper East Siders were the main characters of the show, but a minority thinks that the entire lot of them were pretty greedy and entitled, despite the enormous amount of wealth they already had. Lily van der Woodsen is especially hated because of her behavior with Ivy/Charlie in seasons 4 and 5.
When Cece left Ivy her fortune, knowing full well that Ivy was not Charlie Rhodes, it was because Ivy had truly cared for Cece. Lily should have accepted this and moved on, but she schemed and manipulated Ivy out of a fortune that was rightfully left to her, which was showed Lily in the worst light because she really didn't need more money than she already had.
6 Georgina Was Enjoyable
Georgina was scheming, catty, manipulative, and clearly a villain. However, Redditors seemed to have enjoyed Georgina's character, and played by Michelle Trachtenberg and found that her self-awareness was quite amusing and entertaining to watch.
Some audiences found her "hilariously evil" and thought that she portrayed her manipulative ways refreshingly well, even though she tried to pass off someone else's baby to Dan by guilting him into thinking that he was the Dad.
5 Dan Could Not Have Been Gossip Girl
The big reveal in season 6 was not well received by some. While it made sense from an ideological point of view that Dan would have created the blog when he initially hated the Upper East Siders, it just did not make sense that he would have continued to be Gossip Girl when he became close friends and lovers with most of them.
There are also enough plot holes and Dan acting gravely surprised or upset at GG blasts, which would mean that Dan the author was also an amazing actor.
4 Bart Should've Stayed Dead
The arc of Bart's fake death and survival was a big twist which lots of fans loved, but some really wish that he had actually died, and well, stayed dead. The way he faked his death was unrealistic: by bribing a doctor to turn his machine off, and the motivation behind it was also unlike Bart Bass.
If Bart could have the men who wanted to murder his family arrested later, he could've done the same before without faking the car crash. Redditors also think that Chuck and Blair should've been suspects for Bart's murder.
3 Only Serena Was Decent From The Four
An unpopular opinion has it that from Nate, Chuck, Blair, and Serena, only Serena was halfway decent, yet she got a bad rap. Nate spent his days chasing women who were girlfriend's or exes of his friends but was painted out to be a good man. Chuck did a number of unscrupulous deeds, which included being a total sleaze, but audiences were expected to believe he changed overnight.
Blair openly bullied and banished people from Manhattan, but was also shown to have a kind heart (somewhere in there). However, the only person who showed any remorse was Serena. She admitted her mistakes, wore her heart on her sleeve, and suffered punishment for them too. She still unfairly was painted to be a bad girl.
2 Blair Used Serena As A Punching Bag
Blair and Serena were best friends, yet Blair wouldn't skip one opportunity to hold something over Serena as emotional blackmail. Granted, Serena slept with Nate who was dating Blair at the time, but even after Blair forgave Serena, she always brought up the fact during fights and held it over her head which is not okay in any friendship.
She also projected her insecurities on Serena every time she could. What really rankled fans is that Blair seemed to give a free pass to Nate, Dan, and Chuck who did much worse things to her and never used their mistakes for emotional blackmail.
1 Jenny Was The Only Ambitious One
While the show depicts Blair, Dan, and Chuck as very ambitious young people, they had everything handed to them on a silver platter. It was easy for them to get through doors that would never even open for someone like Jenny.
Jenny figured out what her dream was, and truly went and grabbed it through all odds, which made her the only really ambitious kid amongst the others.
