Gossip Girl: 10 Things You Forgot From The First Episode - Screen Rant

In 2012, Gossip Girl ended its six-year run. Blair and Chuck are married, "Lonely Boy" Dan is no longer lonely and Nate is well on his way to a career in politics. These teens have finally moved on from their high school days of partying and drama to follow their dreams in the big world.

With it now being over, it's worth it to go back to the beginning: the pilot episode that aired in 2007. Viewers are introduced to the glitz and glamour of the upper-class lifestyle of these teens: exclusive parties, penthouse apartments, and exclusive connections to the most powerful people. There's also lots of foreshadowing to the drama that awaits them that you may not remember.

10 First Clue At Gossip Girl's Identity

A cornerstone of the series is who the mysterious "Gossip Girl" is who narrates each episode and also threatens to spill all of the main characters' scandalous secrets. In the pilot, some of "Gossip Girl's" first narrations are about Dan pining after Serena (referring to him as "Lonely Boy").

Later on in the episode, Dan even reads Gossip Girl's posts. Given the revelation of her identity in the final season.... hindsight is usually 20/20.

9 Eric Van Der Woodsen Was In The Hospital

When Serena returns to New York from her time at boarding school, she finds out that her brother, Eric, is in the hospital after a suicide attempt. To add insult to injury, she finds out that their mother, Lily, is keeping Eric's condition under wraps to protect their reputation.

Later in the season, Eric reveals that his suicide attempt was the result of a bout of depression that stemmed from intense loneliness after moving and having his sister go away.

8 Rufus Reveals He Was In A Band

Dan Humphrey's father, Rufus, reveals that he was once part of a relatively successful band named "Lincolnhawk" back in the '90s. In the episode, Rufus reunites with his former bandmates to put on an impromptu concert.

The concert serves as a venue for Dan and Serena to have their first date and begin to get to know each other. It's a pretty big step to introduce one's potential love interest to a parent on the first date.

7 Nate Tries To Get Serena Back

Throughout the series, the main characters get into love triangles and have affairs, very often amongst themselves. In the pilot, Nate is with Blair but seems to have some unfinished business with Serena. This is revealed when he tries to follow her, but she makes it clear that she is not interested in pursuing anything with him.

As it turns out, Nate and Serena had a sexual encounter during a wedding while he was still with Blair. And he still seems to have feelings for her.

6 Dan Helps His Sister Put An Outfit Together

Family plays an important role in this series, particularly among the Humphreys (who are seen as part of a lower class). Dan and his sister Jenny have a very close relationship. This is made obvious when he helps her put an outfit together for a prominent party, "Kiss On The Lips."

Although he is annoyed that Jenny pulls him away from helping out their dad, he is supportive of her. Jenny is equally as supportive of Dan as she encourages him to go after Serena.

5 Nate And Chuck Have A Heart To Heart

Chuck and Nate

The pilot makes it clear that, like Serena and Blair, Nate and Chuck have a close friendship that predates the series. This is seen through their various heart to hearts throughout the episode. During one of their talks in Central Park, Nate confides in Chuck about wanting to explore life outside of Manhattan.

Chuck Bass, the resident bad boy, playfully tells him to think about all of the advantages of their life and to just enjoy his relationship with Blair.

4 Nate Reveals His Affair With Serena

Nate is struggling with his romantic feelings from the beginning. He is pining after Serena, but also wants to stay loyal to Blair. When Blair prepares for them to consummate their relationship, out of guilt, Nate reveals his affair with Serena.

Blair, already struggling with repairing her friendship with Serena, is obviously upset. However, in the aftermath, Nate reveals to his father that his relationship troubles with Blair might not be the worst thing.

3 Serena And Dan Go On A Date

Serena originally had plans to go to the "Kiss On The Lips" party. However, many factors push her to go with Dan to his dad's concert. When Dan jokingly questions if she knows what she's doing accepting his date, she replies that Dan "can't be any worse than the guys [she does] know."

It's an important step for Serena in terms of moving forward, especially with her slew of failed relationships and the "party-girl" image preceding her.

2 Chuck Assaults Jenny

Chuck indulges in his fair share of vices. Unfortunately, he is also insanely entitled. It begins when he tries to take advantage of a drunk Serena in his parent's hotel's kitchen and ends when he does the same to Jenny.

He notices her at the "Kiss On The Lips" party and makes advances on her. Fortunately, she lets Dan know about her suspicions about Chuck. When Chuck proceeds to assault her, Dan and Serena swoop in and save her.

1 Chuck Knows Secrets About Serena

Serena and Chuck

Each character in the series, due to their families and their environment, has to deal with secrets and scandals daily. And some secrets have the potential to ruin relationships. When Chuck comes across a depressed Serena drinking alone, he proceeds to offer her food.

He then reveals that he saw her and Nate's sexual encounter at the infamous "Shepherd Wedding." This is quite the blow to Serena, not only because she is trying to rebuild her image, but it also puts her friendship with Blair in jeopardy.
