Savannah Smith has always had an eye for fashion. Growing up in Los Angeles, she says, “even when we went to the grocery store, I’d dress up. My mom would tell me, ‘we’re just running errands,’ but I always wanted to put my best foot forward.”
It’s a trait she seemingly never outgrew. Today, Smith—an acting major at New York University—is playing dress up professionally as one the stars of HBO Max’s upcoming Gossip Girl series.
While most of the details about the series, which is set to premiere later this year, are still under wraps, it’s safe to say it’ll be a big break for Smith. “Originally, I thought it was a reboot [of the original Gossip Girl series], but it’s an extension—the old characters already exist and we’re the new kids in town,” she explains. “I love that idea because it makes it easy to modernize; everything feels very now. There are still socialites and billionaires, but we’re discovering what that means in 2021.”
Gossip Girl marks Smith’s first television role, but it’s not the only project she has going. “I’m also a musician and a writer,” she explains. “My music is something that’s very important to me, and once the series airs, I’ll get back into the studio and start to release music.”
No matter what comes next, though, it seems safe to say that Smith’s style will be front and center. “The costume fittings,” she says with a laugh, “are my second favorite thing about the job. I just love dressing up.”
And T&C was happy to provide her with an opportunity to do just that. Below, Smith models five different ways to style a classic trench coat.
Weekend Brunch
Trench coats don't have to look prim and proper. A fun print like tie-dye brings an unexpected twist to the garment's classic silhouette, and makes for an ideal off-duty outfit. When going bold with the top layer, keep it neutral underneath: a cozy cream sweater and wide-leg jeans make for an understated pairing. Finish the outfit with a few small, colorful pieces of jewelry, and you're ready to walk out the door.

Big Night Out
When it’s time for a big night out, don’t leave your trench at home! Rather than the classic beige, opt for chic, silken version—and wear it as a dress. Sparkly stilettos and statement jewelry help sell the trench as a glamorous gown.

Morning Coffee Run
Let’s be honest: grabbing coffee isn’t usually an elegant affair. Luckily, there's an easy way to up the ante first thing in the morning—simply throw a trench on over your pre-caffeine loungewear set, and be the most stylish person on the block at 7 a.m. A cute bag and simple jewelry add a little something extra, while pre-distressed sneakers help keep the look down-to-earth.

Meetings On the Go
A classic trench is textbook business-casual—and a great option for any meeting. It's also neutral enough to handle a loud look underneath, especially when you're working with variations on preppy prints like plaid. Feel free to go bold with jewelry—that way, once the hectic day is over, there's no need to change for happy hour.

Evening Cocktails
The dress code for after-work drinks can be ambiguous, making it easy to overthink and underdress—or vice versa. Sidestep the uncertainty with a leather trench, a piece that treads the line between professional and casual. Underneath, a sheer blouse paired with latex leggings shows that you didn’t just roll in from the office. With this look, no matter what bar you find yourself in, you’ll be on the best dressed list.
