Gossip Girl: 10 Storylines The Show Dropped | ScreenRant - Screen Rant

Even perfect people can go astray every once in a while. For 6 seasons, Gossip Girl was the show where t he magic happened (for better or worse) when the core group of kids and adults fell in and out of love, went from friends to frenemies, and celebrated/interfered with each other's lives.

Often, things seemed to go sideways when outsiders crashed the party. The creators meant well for sure, wanting to shake up the characters' privileged day-to-day. Sometimes it worked. A big "thank you" to Georgina (Michelle Trachtenberg) who's Machiavellian tendencies never disappointed, Cyrus (Wallace Shawn) who as the stepdad of Blair (Leighton Meester) brought comic relief as well as poignance, and Ivy (Kaylee DeFer) who brought the crazy. But then there were the other storylines that just went away (for good reason).

10 Blair's Prince Came And Went

man with woman in orange; bride and groom

During a summer in Paris after a painful breakup with Chuck, Blair met and wed Prince Louis, a member of the Royal family of Monaco. This storyline spilled over from Season 4 into Season 5 where it took over a dozen episodes to ditch this time-suck of an idea that one of these Upper East Side stalwarts would marry outside the cohort.

When Louis tells his princess post-ceremony that she will be his wife in name only, Blair becomes a runaway bride but is caught at the airport and intimidated into returning to her groom. It seemed the creators did not know how to tie up this fiasco, so they sent Georgina to Monaco to take care of biz and next thing, Blair had divorce papers.

9 Dan Was A Daddy For A Day

As a part of yet another of Georgina's schemes, she tries to pass off her son Milo as Dan's baby. Without getting a paternity test, he lets the mother and child move in. Georgina then abandons them both. In the interim, Rufus gets a test done and finds out Milo is indeed not Dan's child.

It turns out that Georgina had an affair with a Russian oligarch and his wife had a hit out on her. She thought if she made the wife think the baby was Dan's the woman would leave the devious Georgina alone. Gratefully this stupidity was over by episode 4 of Season 4.

8 Hilary Duff Attended NYU

Guess they needed a little star power to juice up Season 3, so the Younger star was cast as Olivia Burke, assigned to be the roommate of Vanessa (Jessica Szohr) and love interest of Dan. There was a predictable storyline about how she just wanted to be treated like a regular person, and Dan becoming unnerved about his famous girlfriend's on-screen love scenes.

Dan, Olivia, and Vanessa had a threesome and Olivia ended up jealous that there was clearly something between her boyfriend and her roomie. Exit stage left after a half-season of a ho-hum story.

7 Steven And Sage, Why?

man with woman in red and girl in hat

From the minute we met her in Grand Central Station to the show's finale, Serena (Blake Lively) was always bouncing back and forth between Nate (Chace Crawford) and Dan. In between, there was always some "filler" boyfriend who at first blush was going to sweep her away from the Upper East Side, but who only sent her running back to her high school friends and the arms of either of the aforementioned guys forever in love with her.

Steven (Barry Watson) was the last in a long line of men who fit the outsider bill and brought his baggage in the form of a conniving, 17-year-old daughter Sage (Sofia Black-D'Elia) who dates Nate and antagonizes Serena for sport. Neither romance had the zest each was supposed to infuse into the show, but the breakups of both couples did: they met their ends thanks to a leaked sex tape.

6 Serena Got Politically Incorrect With Nate's Cousin

Trip (Aaron Tveit) won a seat in Congress and elected to cheat on his wife with his office worker Serena because she's, well, Serena. This plotline is yet another way to prove what fans already knew: no man could resist the blonde boho-chic Upper East Sider.

In the spirit of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Trip's wife was willing to let him take on a mistress so that they could both live out their Washington D.C. dream. Things end when Serena refuses to be the Marilyn Monroe of this scenario and Trip leaves the scene of a car accident that lands Serena in the hospital.

5 Chuck And The Former Sex Worker

As though the show wasn't soap opera-ish enough, the creators incorporated the daytime drama trope of "amnesia." The Bass heir wakes up in Prague not knowing his identity and was rescued by Eva (Clemence Poesy). When he gets his memory back, Chuck (Ed Westwick) brings his savior home to NYC.

A jealous Blair, along with Serena and Dan, surfed the 'net and found that along with waitress and shopgirl, Eva was a prostitute, which Blair and Nate reveal to Chuck. He says he doesn't care, but Eva leaves anyway because she sees that Chuck and Blair have a deep connection. Fans only had to suffer through four episodes of this story.

4 Rufus And Lily's Love Child

blonde woman in pink; man and boy in blue shirt

There was something really cool about the story of Lily (Kelly Rutherford) and Rufus (Matthew Settle): lovers when they were a young musician and groupie/muse, they reconnected when they were older as an art gallery owner and Manhattan socialite whose kids were friends.

Yes, they would go from "love is better the second time around" to circling the drain; a textbook clash of different people from different worlds. So, who needed the added revelation that their young love produced a child who was given up for adoption, and when the adult kid shows up he's actually the brother of their son who died in an accident? It was a why-are-we-seeing-this story that was gratefully short-lived.

3 Carter's Fall From Grace

blonde woman in red with guy in shirt; man alone

The scion is rich, handsome, well-traveled, and well-connected. Heaven forbid Carter (Sebastian Stan) be a standup guy. Drugs and a gambling IOU equal to the national debt of a small country was his downfall. He was a minor character who took up major time so Serena and Nate could join forces to help him. It ended up being a ruse; Nate had involved Serena in a plot to take down the Buckley family (who Carter owed) trying to hurt his cousin Trip's campaign.

Serena settled Carter's debt but he wanted to take responsibility for his mistakes and left anyway--and not a moment too soon.

2 Juliette Sharp Was Too Dull

Sad woman; same woman mad walking away from two other women

We were introduced to Juliette (Katie Cassidy) when she accidentally on purpose met Nate as a way to get into Serena's orbit. Yes, another person had shown up in NYC to take down one of the gang. A Columbia student as well, Juliette began her agenda by keeping Serena out of a prestigious school club and the passive/aggressive harassment just kept going.

It seems Juliette's boarding school teacher-brother Ben (David Call) was incarcerated after being falsely accused of having an inappropriate relationship with student Serena. Juliette was out to clear his name and get revenge. This storyline dragged and shoulda, coulda been consolidated.

1 Everyone Vying For The Ivies

girl with two guys in hs uniforms; two girls at graduation

Remember how Nate's dad had him destined for Dartmouth? Serena blew off a Brown visit for a private tour of Yale just to aggravate Blair who'd deemed the university her first choice? While visiting the New Haven school, Chuck was kidnapped by a group of Skull and Bones members? And Dan frantically tried to re-submit his letters of recommendation to Ol' Eli when they somehow got lost in transit? What happened to that Ivy League or Bust frenzy?

In an effort to keep everyone in Manhattan, the show's creators decided Blair would not get into her dream school and "settled" for NYU then transferred to Columbia University, Dan would not be able to afford an Ivy so he "settled" for NYU as well. Chuck would be so rich he could say no more to homework, books, and teachers, while Serena would fall into a coveted job as a movie publicist and after many career missteps she would breeze into Columbia far too easily, and Nate would buck family tradition and attend NYU, too.
