Melania Trump Condemns Capitol Violence, Then Denounces ‘Shameful’ And ‘Salacious Gossip’ About Her - Forbes

Topline

In her first comments about the violent pro-Trump riots that rocked the Capitol and left five dead last Wednesday, First Lady Melania Trump condemned the violence her husband encouraged but did not acknowledge who incited it, instead lashing out at critics who apparently took the chaos as an opportunity to spread “salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false misleading accusations” about her after critics derided the first lady’s inaction over the riots and said she was reportedly photographing rugs in the White House as terrorists swarmed into the Capitol.

Key Facts

In a blog post on the White House website, Trump said she is “disappointed and disheartened with what happened last week” and is praying for the families of the six people who lost their lives, including U.S. Capitol Police Officer Howard Liebengood who died by suicide Saturday.

“Make no mistake about it, I absolutely condemn the violence that has occurred on our Nation’s Capitol,” Trump said, adding that “violence is never acceptable.”

Trump also took the opportunity to tear into her critics, saying that she finds “it shameful that surrounding these tragic events there has been salacious gossip, unwarranted personal attacks, and false misleading accusations on me.”

Striking a similar tone to previous denouncements on her critics, Trump described them as “people who are looking to be relevant and have an agenda.”

The first lady’s statement echoed the president’s response to his potential impeachment for his role fomenting violence, saying that “this time is solely about healing our country and its citizens” which “should not be used for personal gain.”

Trump urged people to come together and “never make assumptions based on the color of a person’s skin or use differing political ideologies as a basis for aggression and viciousness,” adding that “we must listen to one another, focus on what unites us, and rise above what divides us.”

Crucial Quote

“It is inspiring to see that so many have found a passion and enthusiasm in participating in an election,” the first lady said, adding that ”we must not allow that passion to turn to violence.”

Key Background

Melania Trump had been silent since a mob of pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol last week in a bid to disrupt the certification of Electoral College votes formally declaring Joe Biden president-elect, a process overseen by Vice President Mike Pence. Donald Trump brazenly encouraged a crowd of his supporters to march on the Capitol and remained conspicuously silent as they tore through the complex. Later statements from the president offered tepid denunciations of the violence, instead focusing on baseless claims of voter fraud and conspiracy. For his role in inciting violence, the president has been almost universally denounced and faces being removed from office via impeachment or the 25th Amendment. After years of pressure, social media companies have finally deplatformed the president, with Twitter banning him permanently on Friday after concluding that there was a genuine risk the president would continue to incite violence using the platform.
