Sex and the City and Gossip Girl might be two shows that aired in two different periods. By the time Gossip Girl premiered, the cast of Sex and the City had aired its final episode. The shows might have focused on different groups, but they still had a few things in common. In fact, fans can argue that Gossip Girl paid homage to Sex and the City with its final music selection.
Sex and the City ended its six-season run with “You’ve Got the Love” by Candi Station
Sex and the City fans got exactly what they wanted when the series ended. Carrie Bradshaw ended up back in the arms of Mr. Big and back in the only place where she made perfect sense. In the final scene of the series, Carrie and her three friends walk down a Manhattan street while “You’ve Got the Love” plays in the background.

The final scene was the perfect end to a series that was as much about friendship as it was relationships. The song became linked to the series, more than any other musical number used during the show’s HBO run.
Gossip Girl used a version by Florence and the Machine to end its run in 2012
Gossip Girl later used a different version of the song to end its own six-season run. Instead of the Candi Station version of “You’ve Got the Love”, the team behind the series picked Florence and the Machine’s rendition. In the show’s finale scene, Dan Humphrey waits for Serena Van Der Woodsen to come down the steps on their wedding day. The music plays loudly as the camera pans out and back onto the street.
Florence and the Machine released their cover of the song in 2009. They weren’t the only musical group to cover the iconic tune, though. Joss Stone released a cover of the song in 2007. Multiple remixes, including several dance versions of the song, also exist.
tWas the final music choice purposeful?
After the final episode of Gossip Girl aired, fans quickly pointed out that the music choice was certainly an interesting one. Viewers outwardly wondered if the decision to use “You’ve Got The Love” was purposefully made to link Gossip Girl to Sex and the City. According to The St. Louis Post-Dispatcher, the latter show certainly appeared to be inspired by the former. The two shows did seem to have a fair bit in common.

Sure, Gossip Girl was about teens at a prestigious prep school initially. Still, just like Sex and the City, it worked in Manhattan as an additional character. Fashion also played an important role, and its rampant run through the Upper East Side felt decidedly like Sex and the City. It would seem fitting that the final scene would link Gossip Girl to the series that made New York City a character in the first place.
