There's a lot of mixed messages in Gossip Girl, as the show thrived on chaos and controversy. But the one aspect that stood out above the others, is that true friends can get through anything. There were plenty of friendships in the teen drama, and despite all the fights and disagreements, everyone found their way back to each other's side.
The characters were closer with their friends than their own families, proving that family has little to do with blood. Gossip Girl may have been sneaky, but they were also extremely smart. They, along with the rest of the Upper East Siders, provided some deep insight about friendship, that viewers can still relate to, ten years later.
8 "All Of The Boyfriends And Mean Girls And Teachers, And Our Crazy Mothers, We Went Through It Together. We Raised Each Other."
A life of luxury isn't always what it cracks up to be, and the characters' home lives are a perfect example of that. Very few of them had good relationships with their parents due to their demanding jobs and travel schedule.
Blair and Serena had to lean on each other and find the comfort they couldn't get from their real families. It was part of the reason why Serena leaving hurt Blair so much. Serena was the only person in the world Blair thought she had in her corner.
7 "You Don't Give Up On The People You Love."
Reviewers weren't exaggerating when they called Gossip Girl "scandalous." The characters all should have ended up in jail much more often than they actually did, and some of their actions would be unforgivable in today's world.
However, their loyalty runs deep and the friends always stick by each other's side. Even if they were angry at one another, or tried to walk away for their own good, the bonds that they formed made it impossible to give up on them completely.
6 "As Much As A BFF Can Make You Go WTF, There's No Denying We'd Be A Little Less Rich Without Them."
Gossip Girl's ability to give life advice while commenting on the characters' wealth never stops being entertaining. They might all have more money than they know what to do with, but while money is important, it's true that it isn't everything.
No matter how much money a person has, it's hard to be happy without someone to share their life with. When any of the BFFs are in a fight, no amount of brunches, vacations, or spa days can mend a broken heart.
5 "Maybe It's Not Blood Bonds That Make Us A Family. Perhaps It's The People Who Know Our Secrets And Love Us Anyway, So We Can Finally Be Ourselves."
While this quote was in reference to Dan and Blair's relationship, it can be applied to all of the found family dynamics in Gossip Girl. The show goes out of its way to send the message that blood means little in the grand scheme of things, and the best families are the ones who are chosen, rather than those who are forced together out of obligation.
In fact, in Chuck's case, there was no love lost when he let his father fall from a building to his death. Family ties aren't equivalent to love, and it can even be seen through Blair's familial relationship with her maid, Dorota.
4 "I Don't Care About Dating A Prince. I Don't Care About Dating Anyone. I Just Care About You."
Blair and Serena had plenty of fights over boys, and some of them got out of hand. Serena left town because of what happened between her and Nate, and there was even another love triangle when both girls had feelings for Dan.
But despite their bickering, they would sacrifice any relationship they were in if it meant ensuring the happiness of the other. Blair and Serena's love easily outshined anything they felt for their romantic interests throughout the show's six seasons.
3 "As Long As We Have Each Other, We're Both Going To Be Okay."
This quote is applicable to several of the friendships in Gossip Girl, as friends are like a safety net who are always there to catch each other when they fall. The Upper East Siders had their world turned upside down on more than one occasion, but all it takes is one person to make everything feel right again.
Nate and Dan's friendship was an unexpected one, given their difference in class and social circles, but before Blair, Nate was Dan's best friend. When they ended up in a fight and stopped talking, it was obvious how much they missed each other.
2 "We Don't Judge. We're The Non-Judging Breakfast Club. We're Your Best Friends."
If there's one thing the characters in Gossip Girl never do, it's judge each other for their past. They get into plenty of arguments and stop talking for weeks on end, but no one in the series is proud of who they once were.
When Serena is afraid to tell the truth about what happened before she left the Upper East Side, her friends let her know that they'll be there for her no matter what. Blair may be the person Serena is closest to, but all the main characters love Serena like family.
1 "We're Sisters. You're My Family. What Is You Is Me. There's Nothing You Could Ever Say To Make Me Let Go."
Out of all the friendships in the series, Blair and Serena's was the strongest. Despite all of the horrible things they did to each other, they were still able to forgive each other and proved that they really do see each other as a family at the end of the day.
Serena even slept with Blair's boyfriend twice, and Blair still managed to forgive him. While it might not be healthy, their betrayals exemplify that Blair and Serena can get through anything. They're stuck with one another for life.
