Here’s everything we know about the upcoming HBO Max’s Gossip Girl reboot, including its release date, cast, and story details. First announced in July 2019, the reboot is based on the teen drama of the same name which aired on The CW from 2007 until 2012. Adapting the novels written by Cecily von Ziegesar, the original Gossip Girl focused on the lives of privileged teens living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Its cast included Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Ed Westwick, and Chace Crawford.
The creative team who worked on Gossip Girl is returning for the reboot. Joshua Safran, an executive producer on the original, will serve as showrunner. He’ll also executive produce the reboot, alongside Gossip Girl co-creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The reboot of Gossip Girl will premiere in July 2021. Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes and, if it follows the release models of other HBO Max dramas like The Flight Attendant and Love Life, it’s possible that more than one episode will be released each week.
HBO Max’s Gossip Girl Cast
The reboot features a large ensemble cast. It includes Whitney Peak (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Emily Alyn Lind (Doctor Sleep), Jordan Alexander (Sacred Lies), Thomas Doherty (Catherine the Great), Eli Brown (Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists), Zión Moreno (Control Z), Tavi Gevinson (The Twilight Zone season 2 episode, “A Human Face”), in addition to Evan Mock and Savannah Smith in their debut roles. Johnathan Fernandez, Jason Gotay, Adam Chanler-Berat, Laura Benanti, Donna Murphy, and Elizabeth Lail (Netflix’s YOU) round out the ensemble.
When it comes to the original cast of Gossip Girl, Kristen Bell will be back to narrate the series. While no other actors are announced as reprising their roles, Lively, Meester, and Crawford have all said they’re open to returning in some capacity.
