Gossip and rumours - and what the Bible has to say - Largs and Millport Weekly News

Thought for the Week

By Pastor Gordon Weir, Brisbane Evangelical Church

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” (Ephesians 4:28)

That questionable joke? That juicy bit of gossip? That unsubstantiated rumour? You are to have nothing to with it. People who want to live to God’s standards are to be different. Your words are to be helpful, not harmful.

People are to experience goodness when you speak. Do people feel the benefit of you being in their conversations? Are you able to bring peace and wisdom where others are creating division and foolishness?

If you want a lesson in how dangerous a weapon the tongue can be then read James’ letter in the New Testament where it is likened to a fire that no-one can get under control. We each need God’s help with this discipline, maybe even more than any other area of our lives.

One slip of the tongue and a relationship can be ended, a reputation can be ruined, and a lifetime of good character can be forgotten.

“Be careful, little tongue what you say.”
