It's hard to think of a revival more highly anticipated than the Gossip Girl reboot, which premiered July 8 on HBO Max. The numbers stacked up to expectations—per Deadline, the show became the most-watched HBO Max original series over its debut weekend. The first episode saw viewers in 555,000 U.S. households. Gossip Girl, fittingly, took over social media, too, garnering the No. 1 trending spot on Twitter on its premiere day and gaining around 15 billion impressions on TikTok.
Whether this success will hold up as the series progresses is yet to be determined, but such initial notoriety is prompting questions as to whether the series will extend beyond just one season. While HBO has not officially commented on the series' renewal, here is everything we know so far about the possibility of a Gossip Girl reboot season two.
Season two has not been officially confirmed.
Though the series' initial success bodes well for renewal, there has been no official word from HBO Max or the series' producers as to whether viewers will get a second season.
Executive producer and showrunner Josh Safran hopes to keep the series going.
Though only two episodes have aired and the series is still in production on season one, Safran already has plans for future seasons. The producer is used to extended series—he executive produced the first Gossip Girl, as well. The original show was on the air for six seasons.
"I definitely would love to keep the show going," Safran told Harper's Bazaar. "I engineered it so that every season is a semester, so that we didn't get into the problem the first show got into, which was by Season 3, they had to go to college. Which, at the time, I think was the right decision. When you look back, then, of course, you could have stayed at high school longer. If every season is a semester and they're going to be juniors now, they would go to college in Season 5."
Safran shared a similar sentiment with Elle, noting that he only started the show in the hope that there would be multiple seasons. He shared that he, in fact, has three seasons planned out.
“I don't do anything without knowing if there's more to it, because I didn't want to wrap it up,” he said. “It's Gossip Girl, and the hope is, you get more Gossip Girl. What's the reason for us doing it again, if there's not going to be more, right? I have three seasons [planned so far], I could tell you right now. We didn't know it was going to happen for six seasons the first time. But right now, I definitely have three in my head.”
Season two might feature cameos from the original cast.
In a conversation with the Daily Beast, Safran revealed that he and the other creators decided not to feature any of the stars from the original show, as to let the audience get to know the new characters ("Why would you want to briefly get to know Zoya if you suddenly can see Nate?" Safran asked). However, should there be a season two, Safran is more willing to include some old Gossip Girl/new Gossip Girl crossover.
"The decision was: Let’s get Season 1 under our belt, and should we get Season 2, we’ll have the chance to bring in cameos that are more than glorified cameos but actually give them storylines," Safran said. "Hopefully we’ll get there and will reach out to the cast if that time comes and see if they’ll want to come. There are some cameos in Season 1 from people on the original show, but not the series regulars."
