When the reboot for iconic teen drama Gossip Girl was announced by HBO Max, fans were conflicted. One half was absolutely delighted that their favorite salacious gossip monger would be back, while the other half felt like the masterpiece should be left untouched. Since then, the reviews are in and the reaction has been mixed; but love it or hate it, it's impossible to ignore it.
There are some significant changes in casting, plot lines, and technology in the renewed version which makes it more modern, but the classic Gossip Girl seems to hook viewers a lot more than the new one. Here's how they fare against each other.
10 The OG: Iconic Characters
The original show made household names out of Blair Waldorf, Serena van der Woodsen, Chuck Bass, Dan Humphrey, and Nate Archibald. Each character was so distinctive that their personalities became as unforgettable as their names, and no one else could really replace the gang, no matter how hard they tried.
Today, the new characters on Gossip Girl are compared to the old ones and seem to be pale shadows of the OG group. While Audrey may be similar to Blair, and Max to Chuck, they can't reach the popularity that their predecessors did.
9 The Reboot: Diversity In Cast
The new show, still led by Joshua Safran, is a lot more self-aware than the first. Whereas the OG GG had an all-white main cast with some token POC characters thrown in, the new GG has Black leading ladies in Jordan, Zoya and Monet, a Filipino character in Aki, and a Mexican character in Luna.
The representation is a very positive change made to the show, and for young people of color to see others like themselves strutting in the best outfits on Gossip Girl is something quite unbeatable.
8 The OG: Unabashed Wickedness
The scandalous plotlines of Gossip Girl is what gained it massive fame and popularity, and even the wrath of parents worldwide. Blair was a ruthless schemer, Chuck threw about his privilege, and a lot of the conspiracies were cutthroat, which was the main appeal of the show.
Apart from a lack of winding schemes, the reboot lacks the punch of a well-delivered snide comment and banishing enemies of the group from the Upper East Side. With the most lively facet of the show gone, the new iteration falls flat.
7 The Reboot: Touches Upon Social Issues
While the Gossip Girl reboot is full of wealthy characters like the original, these Constance and St. Jude's students were a lot more woke and aware of the privilege they were born into. Obie joined protests against his own mother's capitalist schemes and Zoya was a regular activist.
It was refreshing to see these rich kids dip their toes into social issues like racism, homelessness, capitalism, and the inequity of wealth amongst the social classes.
6 The OG: The Identity Of Gossip Girl
The news that Dan Humphrey was Gossip Girl shocked fans worldwide, with some still reeling from it. However, the choice to make the Brooklynite the blogger added up — he was an outsider who wanted to commentate about the Upper East Side, and he was a kid so his pettiness could be forgiven.
The early revelation of Gossip Girl being teachers is the reboot is much more problematic. Adults spying on students and blackmailing them is never going to be cool or edgy and it will be interesting to see how the reboot bounces back from this decision.
5 The Reboot: Updated Gossip Girl With New Technology
Apart from the problematic identity of the new GG, it was nice to see some up-to-date technology in the reimagined blogger's arsenal. While watching the OG series, it gets tiresome to see vintage Blackberrys and clunky computers. Thankfully, the blog is now an Instagram account, and everybody has a sleek new iPhone in their hands.
It adds more authenticity to Gossip Girl's outrageous reveals and claims as Instagram provides visual proof — something that Dan as Gossip Girl didn't have and people just had to take his blogs and shoutouts at face value.
4 The OG: The Characters Had More Ambition
Chuck wanted to build his own business empire, Blair wanted to become powerful in the world of fashion, Nate desired to break away from his grandfather and do something worthwhile with his time, and Serena got famous for being an It Girl. The original characters had a lot of ambition and went to great lengths to prove it.
Apart from Jordan who only decided to monetize her blog very recently, Audrey, Max, Aki, Obie, Luna, and Monet don't seem to want to do anything with their lives. They like wearing expensive clothes, taking photos, going to Dumbo Hall, and partying hard. They're laid back which makes the show more boring.
3 The Reboot: LGBTQ+ Representation
The updated version of the show provides another kind of representation: sexual orientation. The old show only focused on heteronormative romances, and gave little to no time to Eric's relationships with men. The majority of characters were straight, which is something that Safran has fixed in the reboot.
Monet likes women, Luna is a transwoman, Aki seems to be bisexual, as does Max who is gender fluid. Being gay is celebrated and portrayed accurately, instead of making it a side plot or ignoring it completely. The sex positivity is a big plus on the show.
2 The OG: Epic Romances
The couples in the OG Gossip Girl have earned a place in the romance Hall of Fame. Chuck and Blair's epic saga basically carried the show in the latter two seasons, Serena's confusion between Dan and Nate had fans on tenterhooks, and even the love stories of Rufus, Lily, Bart, Cyrus and Eleanor were memorable.
The reboot is very new yet, and while there are some couples people are rooting for, they lack the chemistry that the OG characters had. Zoya, Obie, and Jordan fizzled out very early, so only time will tell if any legendary entanglements will take place in the reboot.
1 The Reboot: Better Cinematography
The original was run by the CW, and the new one is produced by HBO. The difference in cinematic and visual quality is poles apart, and HBO's huge budgets are visible in the dramatic shots, gorgeous locations, and general quality of the reboot.
It's a delight to watch these grand visuals, Jordan's big-scale fashion show being one of the best sequences that came early on in the show. There is no comparison between the cinematic effects between both shows.
