Gossip Girl: 10 Nate Quotes That Are Surprisingly Wise - Screen Rant

In Gossip Girl’s world of schemes and backstabbing, Nate Archibald often falls through the cracks. His season 1 struggle involves choosing between Blair and Serena, and his parents easily manipulate him. Because of these manipulations, Nate isn't often Blair's first choice when she needs help with a plot.

However, Nate also has his virtues. Despite his fallibility, Nate has a good heart. He wants to help those in need and always tries to do the right thing. Because of his moral compass, Nate sometimes has surprising words of wisdom. He may not be the most intelligent, but often he is the wisest.

10 Nate's Words About Happiness In The Pilot

“Aren’t We Entitled To Choose? Just To Be Happy?”

Nate struggles with the age-old issue of identity. Being born to privilege on the Upper East Side made Nate accustomed to many things. But he still questions what his path should be since the Archibalds decide his future for him.

From the start, Nate questions everything and dislike that his parents make choices for him. He is uncomfortable with Blair forcing a relationship he doesn’t feel strongly about anymore. Nate only wants happiness but as Chuck points out, “happiness does not seem to be on the menu.” But Nate is the only one who asks these important questions.

9 Nate’s Stance On Privilege

“The Money, The Drugs, The Privilege. They’re Just Keeping Us Numb So We Don’t Notice It’s Better Out There In The Real World.”

When Nate encounters Carter Baizen, one of Serena's best Gossip Girl boyfriends, he is immediately fascinated. Carter epitomizes everything Nate wishes he could be. Nate wants to be free of his parents and on his own. Even though Nate is ultimately betrayed by this friendship, he also finds a kernel of truth in it.

Nate continues to realize that the world he was raised in is problematic. His friends treat other people as second-class citizens. His parents continue to lie to him. His father even steals Nate’s college fund. Nate is the only one wise enough to realize that there is a world out there with integrity.

8 Nate Warns Jenny About His World

“They’ve Been Friends With Blair Forever And Look What They’re Doing To Her. When You Fall Out Of Line, What Do You Think Is Gonna Happen To You?”

There is no love lost between Nate and Blair in the latter half of season 1. Nate feels betrayed by his best friend and his ex because they slept with each other and lied about it. When Nate sees that Jenny is following Blair’s path, he has to say something.

Jenny takes Blair’s place in the social order of The Girls On the Met Steps. Nate has seen it can take someone down a dark path and can have even worse consequences. Ultimately, Nate’s statement is prophetic. Jenny tries too hard to fit in and gets ousted after stealing Hazel’s mom’s dress from her closet. This wickedness is one of the reasons why the original Gossip Girl reigns supreme and why Nate's observations are so important.

7 Nate Accepts Who He Is

“I’d Spend All My Time Apologizing For The Privilege And The Wealth. Well, You Know What I Finally Learned? You Can’t Fight Against Who You Are.”

After Nate’s father finally goes to prison for embezzlement and fraud, the Vanderbilts allows Nate back into the family. The Captain was an embarrassment and for a time, Nate and his mother had been social pariahs. But once Nate is invited back, he remembers all the ways the Vanderbilts are a family. While there are skeletons in the closet, he understands that he can’t fight against his family.

Blair also has a crisis of conscience at the same time. She loses her spot at Yale and goes on a downward spiral. Nate and Blair come from the same world and the advice that he gives her is what she needs to hear.

6 Nate Calls Out Dan

“Don’t You Ever Get Tired Of Carrying Around That Chip On Your Shoulder?”

Nate had always been the one to give Dan the benefit of the doubt. Always the outsider, Dan doesn’t have friends at St. Jude’s because he comes from a humble home in Brooklyn. Nate always questioned why his friends hazed him when he was the most deserving of opportunities. But even Nate had his breaking point.

While at a college visit to Yale, Dan is possessed by the idea of getting his story read. He lashes out at Nate who doesn’t have to worry about getting into an Ivy League because his parents will pay his way in. The only real friend Dan had was Nate and Dan lashes out at him because of jealousy. Nate articulates an issue many of their classmates have with Dan. Constantly self-righteous, Dan ostracizes himself from those around him.

5 Nate Tells The Captain To Turn Himself In

“If You Can’t Do The Right Thing Then I Can’t Respect You.”

Nate often has to be the adult to both of his parents. While on the run, The Captain tries to lure Nate and his mother to go with him. The Captain stole money from the company he worked for. The Archibalds didn't need the money as they are one of the wealthiest families in Gossip Girl. But Nate's father felt trapped.

Nate takes a stand when his father shows his face again. The Captain going on the run was wrong and Nate wasn’t about to let his father hurt his family again. Nate has to be the adult in his family and tell both of his parents that The Captain has to face the consequences of what he’s done.

4 Nate Sees Dan Is Changing

“It’s Not About Jenny. It May Have Started Out That Way But This Is About You Getting Revenge.”

Dan’s time on the Upper East Side has a palpable effect on him. Though he tries to ignore politics, he can’t help but be dragged into it. Once Dan and Serena break up in their college years, Dan can’t wrap his head around the slights Blair has caused. Jenny was exiled from Manhattan for being a Gossip Girl character who fans can't stand and for sleeping with Chuck. When Jenny dares to return, Blair sabotages her.

Even though Dan feels as though he has the moral high ground, he uses Blair’s tactics against her. He releases information that Blair saw Jack the summer that Chuck was living in Europe under an assumed name. Nate can’t accept that Dan has gone to such underhanded lengths. He realizes that Dan was once good, but has started to turn to the dark side.

3 Nate Sees He’s Being Used By His Parents

“Her Loyalty? Or Her Mother’s?”

Nate’s eternal struggle is fighting against what his parents think is best. They continue to push him towards Blair because his father does business with her mother. Nate doesn’t feel connected to the relationship anymore but his mother gives him an engagement ring to give to Blair.

Nate understands that this isn’t a selfless gesture. The deal with Eleanor Waldorf is falling through and they need Nate to fix the situation. Nate is wise enough to see through this altogether and knows that it isn’t fair to him or Blair.

2 Nate Gives Vanessa Advice

“I Don’t Think Your Parents Are Going To Be Mad At You For Choosing Your Own Path… Unless They’re Related To My Parents.”

After severing ties with his father as well as Chuck and Blair, Nate finds his path. He hangs out in Brooklyn due to his own volition. This surprises Vanessa when they start seeing each other. Nate has layers and is the one to give her advice when she needs it.

Vanessa wants to go to film school, something her family is against. They are artists and don’t believe in privatized education. Nate knows from his own experiences that at some point, parents have to let their children decide what is best for them.

1 Nate Sees Chuck’s Pain

“You’re Not Drinking. I Always Know It’s Serious When Even You Know You Can’t Dull The Pain”

Chuck and Nate in Gossip Girl

Nate has had backstage passes to the drama of Chuck and Blair’s relationship. Nate knows things are serious when Chuck decides to let Blair go. While Blair decides to pick Chuck, Chuck thinks he's a bad influence. He encourages Blair to return to her fiance.

This is the most selfless thing Chuck has ever done. Blair is the only thing Chuck cares about and Nate knows the warning signs. Chuck is the most heartbroken he's ever been.
