Gossip Girl: The Best Ship In Each Season | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

Gossip Girl was a product of its time, from music to fashion to relationship dynamics, and while the iconic series about the Upper East Side’s elite even gained a reboot, some aspects of the original series are beyond reproach. Many fans tuned in each week to watch their favorite couples and the drama they created, but the battle for the title of best relationship could often be contentious.

The end of the series united most of the fan-favorite couples, but that wasn’t the case season to season. While there were certain couples that fans always wanted to be together, the story didn't always deliver. Some couples dominated seasons while others were forgotten as soon as they arrived - but the best couples are determined by chemistry, storylines, and screen time.

Season 1: Dan and Serena

There are many contenders for the best ship in season 1 of Gossip Girl. Arguably the best season, couple drama was paramount. However, the one couple integral to the season is the one that kicked everything off: Dan and Serena. First and foremost, the chemistry between the pair is undeniable. Serena had just returned from boarding school, tired of the prep school crowd. Dan had been in love with Serena since he was accidentally invited to a birthday party.

Dan and Serena are romantic in a way that other couples aren't in season 1, even delivering some of Gossip Girl's most romantic moments. Being from two different worlds, friends and family struggle to accept their relationship in Season 1 meaning they are unappreciated and have many obstacles to overcome. Despite their issues, it was their relationship that pushed the narrative of the series forward, making them the first season's best couple.

Season 2: Chuck and Blair

Whether the writers initially intended this or not, Chuck and Blair became the breakout couple of the series with passionate fans shipping them until the very end. They, of course, have iconic moments in the first season such as their encounter in the limo, but season 2 is where they really shine. The season proved the resident bad boy and mean girl were meant to be together.

Season 2 sees the drama of their relationship kick in. Blair battles with her need to be loved while Chuck confronts his commitment issues. This mixes in with each of their respective jealousies and undeniable attraction. Season 2 is all about Chuck and Blair. The season finale is the most satisfying moment for the couple when Chuck finally replies to one of Blair's best Gossip Girl quotes by saying "I love you."

Season 3: Lily and Rufus

The parents are often forgotten in teen dramas, but Lily and Rufus’ relationship is one for the ages. Their relationship mirrors Dan and Serena’s dynamic, except the years of pining lasted longer. Lily and Rufus fell in love in their youth, long before the show began to tell their story. However, Lily was one of the wealthiest characters in Gossip Girl while Rufus was in an up-and-coming grunge band. He never quite made it and Lily married up instead.

But their dynamic perseveres even through Lily’s multiple marriages and their children’s on-again-off-again relationship. They finally come together in the third season and eventually get married. It's a satisfying moment for viewers and makes the pair the best ship in season 3.

Season 4: Chuck and Blair

Chuck and Blair’s relationship is a recurring thread throughout the entire show. But they are less relevant in some seasons and more important in others. Season 4 is a big season for their respective character development. They go from hating each other to having unattached sex, to confessing their love for each other (again). This season is particularly torturous for them, especially when Blair gets engaged to Prince Louis Grimaldi, one of Gossip Girl's most hated characters.

Although it seems for much of the season that they will wait for each other, Blair could not pass up the chance to become a princess. Chuck goes through one of the darkest periods of his life as he struggles with Blair’s decision and he carries out one of his worst acts when he has an outburst at the news of her engagement. However, this had to happen for Chuck to realize that his toxic behavior needed to stop and he eventually makes the selfless decision to let Blair go so she can be happy. Chuck becomes the best version of himself because of Blair, and although ironically she isn't able to experience it that season, their ups and downs make them the stand-out couple of season 4.

Season 5: Dan and Blair

Dan and Blair are a highly divisive couple, though there is no doubt that they dominated season 5. While writing his book, Dan realizes his feelings for Blair reach beyond fiction and into real life. Her intelligence and taste match his sensibilities and he is also there for her during her traumatic divorce from Louis.

Ultimately Blair and Dan are not meant to be together. Like when Blair was with Nate, Dan only liked versions of her and did not take the good with the bad. However, they do have cute moments that make them the best and most interesting couple in season 5 - such as Dan helping Blair relive her dream of being a princess on the steps of the Met.

Season 6: Chuck and Blair

There are many revelations at the end of Gossip Girl that had fans confused. The subject of Gossip Girl’s identity did not make sense, but there are also aspects of the season that satisfied years of shippers’ hopes. The biggest question of the series was if fan-favorite couple Chuck and Blair would get their happy ending.

Throughout all the pain, schemes, and missed opportunities, fans wanted to see Chuck and Blair finally have the chance to be happy. Viewers got their wish when, in the final episode, Chuck and Blair get married in Central Park. They get married partly so Blair doesn't have to testify against Chuck in the case of Bart Bass, but fans know this is not the real reason behind their marriage. After all their trials and tribulations over the course of six seasons, it was the only way Gossip Girl could end with a satisfying conclusion.
