Liverpool have already been linked with one Benfica midfielder; now it seems they’ve shifted their sights to another. Also: Man Utd are among three in for Victor Osimhen…

LIVERPOOL EYE BENFICA MIDFIELDER
We can expect a long line of midfielders to be linked with Liverpool between now and next summer. Jude Bellingham is their primary target but there is a now long queue of clubs at Borussia Dortmund’s door, some of whom the Reds will have you believe they can’t compete with financially.

So Liverpool will have to consider alternatives and a few have been mentioned. Enzo Fernandez is one, but now it seems Jurgen Klopp’s eye has wandered across the Benfica dressing room.

O Jogo says Florentino Luis has been contacted about a possible move before next season. The 23-year-old defensive midfielder has started 11 of Benfica’s 13 domestic and European games this term and only recently signed a new contract. But the story goes that Liverpool are prepared to pay the £104million release clause to land the former Portugal Under-21 international.

POCH WANTED BY VILLA IF AXE FALLS ON GERRARD
One ex-Liverpool midfielder is in a spot of bother at Aston Villa…

Steven Gerrard is fighting to keep his job after a poor start to the current season followed an underwhelming end to the last one. On Monday night, one outlet went as far as to claim that Gerrard had already been sacked, a story that was quickly dismissed by Villa’s head of communications.

But it seems something is afoot, with Villa at least considering their options should they feel the need to dispense with the former Rangers boss. The Telegraph reckons Gerrard has been given two games to save his skin – the trip to Fulham on Thursday before a home game against Brentford on Sunday. Should Villa fail to bail out their boss, then Mauricio Pochettino is the primary target to come in.

MAN UTD, ARSENAL AMONG TRIO LEADING OSIMHEN RACE
Manchester United could do with a goalscorer right now but it seems the Red Devils are content to wait until the end of the season. On Monday, Tammy Abraham was a reported target; today, United are being linked with a move for Victor Osimhen.

Fichajes says the Napoli striker is seen as the ideal striker for Erik ten Hag’s needs, with Arsenal and Bayern Munich making up the three sides said to be leading the race.

All three, though, might be p*ssing in the wind. “He has a long contract with Napoli,” Osimhen’s agent has told local radio in Naples. “The market is dynamic, but our will is to continue at Napoli and continue to do well.”

The 23-year-old does indeed have a plenty of time left on his current deal – he’s tied down until 2025. But reports suggest Osimhen’s release clause is in the region of £85million, which may be tempting for the likes of United, Arsenal and Bayern.
