Unhappy that he had gone around gossiping, one 80-year-old man attacked an 88-year-old man with a knife in Ang Mo Kio, leaving the older male covered in blood.

The incident took place on Mar. 17  at around 6pm in front of a Sheng Siong supermarket at the foot of Block 112 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, Chinese media Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min) reported.

Regulars at nearby coffee shop

Speaking to reporters, one coffee shop stall assistant from the eatery nearby, Xie (hanyu pinyin), shared that the two elderly men were regulars there.

Xie told Shin Min that two days before on Mar. 15, the 88-year-old man had apparently gone around tittle-tattling.

The wife of the 80-year-old man caught wind of the gossip, and later informed her husband about it, Shin Min wrote.

The two men then got into an altercation on Mar. 15.

The stall assistant told Shin Min that when the confrontation took place on Mar. 17, the younger man had threatened the older man by saying, "Watch out or I'll chop you."

The older man responded by saying he was unafraid of the threats.

Lacerations across face and arm

One eyewitness told Shin Min that at the time of the incident on Mar. 17, a commotion was heard outside the store he worked at.

It turned out that an elderly male, covered in blood and lacerations, had collapsed on the floor.

Several onlookers went to render assistance, the eyewitness said.

"The 88-year-old had a large knife wound across his face. His blood stained his clothes and there was blood all over the coffee shop floor," Luo (hanyu pinyin), owner of the mixed rice stall at the nearby coffee shop, recounted to Shin Min.

Luo added that SCDF officers dressed the injured man's wounds before conveying him to the hospital.

According to Shin Min, apart from his nose and cheeks, the man also sustained knife wounds on his arm from attempting to shield himself during the assault.

Responding to queries from Mothership, SCDF said they received a call for assistance at around 6pm on Mar. 17.

SCDF later conveyed one person to Tan Tock Seng hospital.

A Singapore Police Force (SPF) spokesperson told Mothership that the police were alerted to a case of assault at around 6pm on Mar. 17 along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

The police added that the 88-year-old man was conscious when he was conveyed to the hospital.

Nabbed at home

After attacking the older man with a knife, the 80-year-old man apparently fled home, Shin Min reported.

Two to three police officers later visited the man's home as part of their investigations.

At around 7:30pm that same evening, police officers were seen leaving the home with the poker-faced man.

The police also cordoned off one of the lifts at the block.

Shin Min reporters observed blood-stained handprints on the inside and outside of the lift.

The police also recovered a fruit knife, which is believed to be the weapon used in the assault, Shin Min wrote.

According to the police, a 80-year-old man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by a dangerous weapon.

"A knife was seized as a case exhibit. Police investigations are ongoing," the police said.
