I just wrote in the previous post about Joshua Jackson and Lupita Nyong’o and the Friends to Lovers trope. Now we have another trope happening – it’s the Enemies to Lovers trope, very popular, and while this isn’t about a conventional romance, friendships can function like romances. Falling in love with a friend can give you the same rush, and friendship origin stories can follow the same patterns. Sometimes a friendship begins with conflict. And that’s where we find Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry.
Halle was at the Red Sea Film Festival this week and in an interview with Variety she was asked about her upcoming project with Angelina. It was confirmed back in April that the two Oscar winners had signed on to Maude v Maude, about two spies going head-to-head. As Sarah wrote at the time, it’s a dream team, a dream cast.
But as Halle told Variety, things between her and Angelina got off to a “rocky start”:
“We had a rocky start and I think that is going to serve us well in our screen time together,” said Berry, adding she is “thrilled to work with another woman and craft a story with our sensibility and from our point of view. She is formidable.”
When prodded about the reasons behind the complicated first steps in their relationship, Berry said people were going to have to wait to hear that story, but it’s a “good one.” The actor reinforced her belief that the initial conflicts between her and Jolie will help cement their friendship and that the two eventually bonded over many things they share in common: “We’ve been talking a lot about divorces and exes. We bonded, let’s say that.”
Girl, I would love to eavesdrop on those bonding sessions over divorces and exes. That’s basically a gossip porno.
On the initial tension, I appreciate that Halle is offering us a different version of how female friendships can begin – because of course we are often stereotyped this way too. Many of the celebrity female friendship stories we hear are all about how they clicked right away and it was lovey dovey from there. Halle’s all like, nah, Angelina and I were like Lizzie and Darcy – the sparks flew from the friction and all that heat eventually ended up in intimacy.
It's also a smart way for Halle to sell the movie because that’s basically what happens with their characters. Two covert adversaries who eventually have to work together, like Mr & Mrs Smith without the sex. Or maybe there will be sex, because now I’m thinking that Maude v Maude is giving gay… no complaints here!
So we already have talking points for when the press tour happens and Halle hits the road with Angelina to promote the movie. She’s already teasing that it’s a good story and, I’m assuming, they’ll eventually share it when they’re ready to release. Halle’s been scouting locations for Maude v Maude so hopefully production will be underway early in the new year and we can get eyes on it sooner rather than later.
