Dear Gossips,
Did you get the sense during last night’s Critics Choice Awards that, on the television side, the nominees and winners were kinda saving it for the Emmys? The Emmys were always intended to happen on a Monday, but originally it was supposed to be back in September. The event was pushed to January because of the strike – which is why we’re getting back to back award shows and that may have affected how some of the stars approached the Critics Choice. The speeches from the television winners, to me at least, seemed pretty casual, almost as though they were holding onto their official speeches for the following night. Winning an Emmy, after all, is considered the biggest prize when you’re making TV.
And tonight’s Emmys will be the final ride for Succession. If what we’ve seen so far is any indication, it’ll be Succession, The Bear, and Beef going into the Emmys as the favourites to win in the drama, comedy, and limited or anthology series categories.
If you’re a nominated series in the comedy category, though, is it getting more and more annoying that The Bear is being submitted as a comedy? The Bear is certainly funny, at times, but the comedy is there to balance out the drama – and the drama is the focus. Unlike, for example, other comedy series nominees Abbott Elementary and Only Murders in the Building. It would be a lot different for The Bear if it was going up against Succession and The Last of US. Not that I don’t love The Bear, because I do! I’m just saying it continues to make no sense, to me at least, that the series is being voted on in that category. More on The Bear later today.
As for the others, well, we’re never going to hear, publicly, what the teams behind those shows actually think of these strategic submissions. So let’s just kick it off by celebrating the style of the cast from Abbott Elementary because Quinta and her crew came to slay all weekend.
Did I mention it was ALL weekend? It has been a relentless start to January with alllll these award shows and events – from Palm Springs to the Golden Globes, the Governors Awards, the AFI Awards on Friday, the Santa Barbara Film Festival and the BAFTA Tea Party on Saturday, then the Critics Choice Awards, and tonight the Emmys…
These first two weeks of January have been an award season bonanza. After this, a three week break until the Grammys and the rush begins all over again.
So here’s Quinta in a lovely floral last night.
The theme was florals all weekend for Quinta. She had flowers around her neck at the AFI Awards on Friday…
…and flowers also for the BAFTA Tea Party on Saturday – this is a perfect tea party dress, non?
But how about Sheryl Lee Ralph? Sheryl is styled by her daughter Ivy Coco Maurice and she never, ever disappoints. This is just spectacular – and if this look is just the appetiser for tonight’s Emmys, how will she possibility top it?!
Same goes for Janelle James…because her dress for Critics Choice last night was, in my opinion, her best ever. And the caption also deserves an award.
Full Emmys coverage is coming tomorrow – but before that, we’re LIVE CHATTING the Emmys tonight at The Squawk! Join us at 430pm PT/730pm ET as we watch and gossip and… maybe…LOL… lipread?!
