PETA is taking aim at celebrities who bought their four-legged friends instead of adopting, Page Six can exclusively reveal.
As part of a new ad campaign, the animal rights organization has released a letter from “Max the shelter dog” imploring “Famous people” to stop getting their pups from breeders and pet stores.
“I hear that some of you whose faces are on the big and small screens have spent a lot of money buying puppies from breeders. That’s why there aren’t enough homes for dogs like me. I guess I just want to know what’s wrong with me,” reads the letter obtained by Page Six.
“Sure, I may not be a puppy — but I still have years of life ahead of me and so much love to give.”
In a separate statement sent to Page Six on Thursday, PETA said they “point the finger” at certain stars, including Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis, who “could have set a positive example and saved a life by adopting a dog from an animal shelter.”
“PETA is asking Hollywood stars to inform themselves about the homeless-animal crisis and stop contributing to it, to recognize that their choices have an impact that reaches far beyond Instagram, and to show a little compassion for the 70 million homeless companion animals in the US,” the statement read.
In June, PETA called out Lopez after she gifted her 12-year-old son Max a Goldendoodle. In October, Davis revealed she had added a pup to her family, but didn’t specify if she had purchased or adopted.
“You could so easily adopt a homeless dog like me and influence so many others to do the same,” the letter continues. “But when you buy a dog and post a photo of your new ‘purebred’ puppy online, it makes things so much worse for dogs like me.”
PETA’s letter will appear as an ad in this week’s Hollywood Reporter. A billboard reading “Dear Famous People, Stop Buying Dogs” is also set to go up Monday in Los Angeles on Melrose Avenue and Cahuenga Boulevard.
